Help! "Location History is not available for this device" Issue.

Hello! to all fellow Local Guides and our Global Citizens!

It’s been almost two years since I’ve been desperate to solve this “Location History is not available for this device” issue.

The error has been there ever since I switched my phone to iPhone from Galaxy models, and it made me give up contributing to the community as it became too much hassle to solely be dependent on my memory and fetching photos of the places I visited, to contribute to the Maps.

From Quora to Tripadvisor, I have tried all the solutions I could google but somehow none of them worked out for me and I’m writing this post as the last grasp of hope :disappointed:

The hardware is iPhone XS bought in South Korea, currently being used in Vietnam, but the function never worked whichever the countries I visited the last couple of years.

I wish someone in the community suggest the possible solution for me and other fellow Local Guides who might have been facing similar issues.

And if you are a Googler reading this post, it would be super-duper to have technical support from Google Maps team so please feel free to fetch me to the related personnel :slightly_smiling_face:

Lastly, here’s the screenshot of the error I’ve been seeing for… quite a long time, if it can help to resolve the issue!

Cheers to all Local Guides making the world a better place,

And thanks to all Googlers, for making all of these possible!

Hello @Uhank

You have informed you have contacted various online forums.

Trust you have done a lot of web search also.

Though I do not use the iPhone, I found an exact description of your problem on one side & also the possible solution. It’s surprising you couldn’t locate that.

I can’t provide any external links here. However, I am apprising the salient steps as below.

The problem appears to be because of incorrect linking of your Google account to the device.

To resolve that, first, find out how many devices are there in your Google account through https://myaccount.google.com/device-activity.

Then sign out from all the devices.

Factory reset your iPhone.

Next, sign in Apple ID.

Download Google Maps & sign in to your Google account. If you have set up two-step verification, please ensure access to that.

Then through settings & location history, you should be able to activate that.

PS. Local policies and authorities restrict activation of some features in the Maps app. If you are from any such region, you have to forego the location history.

Thank you for your reply!

I’ve just tried factory reset, and the location sharing became available for a second and got disabled right away.

I have tried other similar methods involving uninstalling, logging out and all, but they’ve all failed every single time.

My assumption, for now, is that Google is not allowing location history recording to any account that the main payment method is set in South Korea due to local policy.

Although I’m currently based in another country, corporations like Google and Apple seem to allocate a user’s region based on the payment method, as it is the most verifiable piece of information, per se.

Sadly enough I’ll have to stick to where I am.

But again, thanks for your second opinion, and looking forward to keeping in touch through the community.

Best Regards!

Hello @Uhank

Sad to know the local policies are restricting activation of history in your region.

I have edited my reply to add that so as to make it useful to a person looking for an answer on a similar issue.

Now since you have changed your place of residence, you can try changing the region using a local payment method.

However, it would be doubtful whether the location history will remain active once you move back to your home country.

Compliance to the local regulations can’t be waived for anybody.
