I love new experiences and the more unusual they are, the better. Earlier this month, I visited the Museum of Illusions, a newly opened museum in Sofia. It’s the first of its kind in Bulgaria and it is already attracting a lot of attention.
Located in the city center, the Museum of Illusions is easily accessible by tram and metro. It’s a great place for families with children and anyone who is looking to have some fun. Visitors are welcome and even encouraged to touch and play with the exhibits.
So, what kind of illusions can you find there?
The museum houses objects, drawings, and installations that aim to confuse your perception of the physical world. They use color, shape, angle, and perspective to create seemingly impossible images and experiences. These are called optical illusions.
One of my favorite tricks at the museum was the upside-down room where all the furniture was fixed to the ceiling. I could do all kinds of silly poses, then rotate my photos and make it look like I was the one hanging from the ceiling!
Another popular spot for visitors was the wall with two dimensional images that appeared three dimensional. There was a wave “pouring out” of its frame and a boy trying to “escape” the confinement of his drawing. I had a lot of fun pretending to blow soap bubbles for the boy to catch.
Special stickers on the floor of the museum indicated the best spots to stand and take photos. Those were very helpful for illusions that played with perspective. Can you guess how the trick with the chair below works?
It took a little over an hour to experience all of the exhibits. I took my time playing with the various items and installations and even went back to try some of them twice. There weren’t that many people as I went during the week. Weekends can get busy with families and children.
