After two Italian dinners in Hannover, I was beginning to wonder if I was ever going to eat German food in Germany. ![]()
So after another long day at IAA Transportation, I headed towards Lister Meile with one mission: find a proper German dinner.![]()
And this time, I found it.
Reimanns Eck felt immediately different from the restaurants I’d visited so far — warm, relaxed and very local. Exactly what I had been looking for.
Dinner was a wonderfully generous pork schnitzel with mashed potato, accompanied by a local German beer. Simple, hearty and absolutely delicious. And after a full day walking around an exhibition, and skipping meals, that enormous plate was very welcome! ![]()
But, as so often happens when travelling, the part I’ll probably remember most wasn’t actually the food.
Our waitress was wonderfully friendly and helpful, and during our conversation we discovered that she plays rugby.
Two South Africans sitting in a German restaurant talking rugby with our German waitress? Of course we had to ask which teams she supports.
The All Blacks and the Springboks.

Suddenly Hannover felt just a little bit closer to home.
Three episodes into this little Hannover series, I’m realising that some of my favourite travel memories aren’t necessarily the things I planned to find. They’re the unexpected places, conversations and connections that happen along the way.
And yes — I finally found my schnitzel. ![]()
I’ve also added my experience to Google Maps:

Have you ever travelled somewhere and found that a completely unexpected conversation became one of your favourite memories from the trip?
