Handle with Care: Merging vs. Permanently Closing vs. Deleting a POI

Grazie @DENIT33 .

Thank you @Katarina_Cibikova . This is the most useful part of a community like Connect: we always learn something from each other

You are very welcome, @SonamW , @Gezendunyali

Thanks for this

Thank you so much for your help @ErmesT :handshake:, it’s done now :white_check_mark: and I checked the map. everything looks perfect :+1:

Anche un proprietario con 2 attività è una possibilità possibile. Si si concordo con te che bisogna prestare attenzione ed essere accurati.
Ciao @ErmesT
grazie ancora

Wonderful post, as usual @ErmesT I am always very careful on handling this subject. Thank you for making it so clear and easy to understand the situation!

A great article, however, I have some questions:

A place that has been permanently closed is like “non-existent”, I mean… It’s really going to remove the signboard so it doesn’t exist, whether it’s going to be permanently closed It’s just a “signal to those who want to visit” at some point in the future “forced” must it disappear?

@ngocvuphanthiet
A place that is permanently closed is a place that doesn’t exist anymore. The pin will slowly disappear from Maps and it will be found only by a direct search.
However, if you look carefully at the edit pop-up, you will see that Doesn’t exist here refers to a place that “Isn’t real, doesn’t exist here or never existed

In this way you will preserve the historical information about the place, and of course you will help those who want to visit the location".
In addition, the Local Guides who contributed will keep the contributions

For me, the possibly to find a permanently closed business has advantages:

  • Searching a business, I visited long time ago, not being 100% sure where exactly it was, the search can confirm it is closed now. Looking at the old photos or reviews, I can even tell until when it was open.
  • Other maps not from Google, might show a place which doesn’t exist. This actually happened to me yesterday. I found a restaurant on TomTom at a very unlikely location. Searching by name on Google Maps, I found out there used to be a restaurant about a kilometer away, which is now permanently closed.

Thank you for your response, @ErmesT, I still have another question: how long does it take for the venue to close permanently? Should it be reported as non-existent? Three months, half a year, one year or leave it as is? And data on “locations that have been permanently closed” does it affect the search data in that area? Thank you.

What do you mean, @ngocvuphanthiet ?

  • how long does it take for the edit to be approved? This depends of the time needed to verify the edit. Many times, while exploring places in Maps, I’ve seen the message “this place may be closed. Can you confirm that?” The message is part of the Fact Checking used by Google Maps to verify an edit when a place is flagged as “Permanently closed”. In some cases the acceptance is very fast, depending both on your Trusted Level and the possibility of verifying it through information sourced online.
  • How long does it take for an approved edit to be visible online? Normally around 24 hours, as it’s related to the synchronization of the servers where the information is stored.

Depending of the popularity of a listing, the pin may disappear in days or weeks, and after that it will be possible to find it only with a direct search, like searching for the Name of the business

Oh, so I got it, thank you for sharing, @ErmesT

@ErmesT Thanks for these tips. This has happened to me in Mexico City. I loved the scenario you used to illustrate the situation, and my best intentions :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: will definitely be based on your recommendations to edit properly. Best regards.

@ErmesT , Thank you for this very helpful post. I liked your tip about first making the places the same (name, category, and website) before suggesting a merge.

@ErmesT @MortenCopenhagen again I faced a similar issue too — same place showing with 5 different names.I tried merging them, but the edit is still pending. Because of thousands rivews ..

Can you help me

I looked briefly at the 5 bus pins.

I lack the local knowledge to determine if some of there are private or public bus companies as they could be entitled to each their pin.

I’m just a volunteer, and researching and fixing this can easily take a very long time.
So I will refer you to the Google Maps Help Community.

When you make a post, please include the needed info to understand these pins and how they are related.

Also, it would be helpful if you made a table showing the place names, the category, whether they are claimed or not and if suggesting an edit is available or not.

This is likely to help the product experts to more easily help you.

You will also have to indicat which of them you believe is the primary one the others should be merged into

And you need to attach screenshots showing the current status of the edits you already suggested to fix this.

Best of luck.

Thank you for your guidance and detailed explanation. I appreciate the time you’ve taken to help me understand the process. I will gather the required information, prepare the table and screenshots, and post it in the Google Maps Help Community. Thanks again for your support.

Sir, this is a government bus depot. The main location is this one, and all the other listings appear to be duplicates that should be merged into this primary location. This is a public place used daily by many people. Someone created those pins, and it now has thousands of reviews.

I don’t understand this @ErmesT, and I guess it is what @ngocvuphanthiet was trying to ask about. Why should it be marked Permanently Closed if it is only temporary until another season of the year? In my country, a new restaurant opened in late 2025 just before the traditional Winter tourist season (November to April). Then, in May this year, I saw all the outdoor beachside seating moved away and stacked inside, and the place is now marked Temporarily Closed. I was among the first to upload photos of this POI, and have a photo with 61000 views as a result.
