Haiti's Citadelle Laferrière - Roi Christophe's fortress and World Heritage Site

In the mountains above Milot in Northern Haiti is the amazing Citadelle Laferrière built by Roi Christophe between 1805-1820. Newly independent from France, Roi Christophe wanted to have a good vantage point in the event of future invasions. One of the most popular tourist destinations in Haiti, the Citadelle can be reached by driving to Milot and then either hiking (that’s what I did) or riding a donkey to the top. Back when I went there was talk of starting an ATV rental service.
