Gurudwara Data Bandi Chhod Sahib, perched within the historical Gwalior Fort, commemorates one of Sikhism’s most inspiring episodes. This sacred shrine honors Guru Hargobind Sahib, the sixth Sikh Guru, who was imprisoned here by Mughal Emperor Jahangir in the early 17th century. Guru Hargobind’s iconic liberation of 52 Hindu princes alongside himself turned this location into a living symbol of compassion, justice, and the triumph of freedom. The gurudwara, constructed in the 1970s and 80s, features a resplendent white marble facade adorned with traditional Sikh domes and intricate floral patterns, echoing purity and strength. Its sprawling campus includes the main prayer hall and a grand entrance lined with red carpets, welcoming devotees into a tranquil spiritual haven.
Inside, the sanctum houses the Guru Granth Sahib beneath a lavishly gilded canopy, surrounded by iridescent frescoes and luminous inlaid surfaces. The serene interiors invite meditation, prayer, and reflection, while adjacent halls provide both community gathering spaces and langar facilities for all visitors.
Data Bandi Chhod Sahib is especially vibrant during “Bandi Chhor Divas”, the Sikh festival of liberation, marked by prayers, joyous processions, and charitable feasts. The gurudwara’s peaceful setting and historical depth make it a pilgrimage destination for Sikhs and a revered heritage site for all.
More than a monument, Gurudwara Data Bandi Chhod Sahib stands as a beacon of hope and resilience, preserving the legacy of Guru Hargobind’s compassion and the enduring spirit of Sikhism in the heart of Madhya Pradesh.
