This year due to pandemic we are not celebrating on large scale we will make langar ( food) give to poor. For the First time on Guru Nanak Jayanti Gurudwaras will be closed there won’t be any big celebration due to covid19. Only langar is served to poor following all rules & regulations…

Last year we had Grand Celebration .

Nagarkirtan
Prior to the birthday, a procession known as Nagarkirtan is organised, led by the Panj Pyaras carrying the Sikh flag, known as the Nishan Sahib and the Palki (Palanquin) of Guru Granth Sahib. We sing hyms & walk all the lanes near by Community people invited at there house we go to there house do Ardas then kada prasad is serve if they wish they serve tea snack. Like this we are invited it’s goes on for a week, but this year due to covid19 the Nagar Kirtan is cancelled.

Very well-written article @RosyKohli I wonder how you got a chance to take a photo inside the shrine since I was always prohibited during my visits to various Gurudwaras in Delhi and Punjab.

Thanks, Yes photography is prohibited in Gurudwara , Nanakana Sahib gurudwara Pakistan when corridor was open my brother cousin brother from US visited in December 2019 , they allowed to click photo of golden palki from inside so that more tourist visit without passport you can visit gurudwara from corridor. So I took photo from my brother.

In small gurudwara they don’t object , so last year I took pics of my area gurudwara. If you wish go have darshan of Nankana Sahib.

When I was in India I found that issue too that many places did not like you to take a photo. I found that plenty of them would let you do it if you paid a fee. I did wonder if the fee went to the place or the guards pocket @TusharSuradkar

At some temples and shrines I was ignored when taking photos and in some I was encouraged to take them and share so more people would see them but in some, yes the “no photo” sign or simply a waggling finger signalled no.

“…if the fee went to the place or the guards pocket…”

Dear @PaulPavlinovich - official fee (Tickets) may go to the shrine, but the unofficial fee is for the guard.

Yes, unfortunately, what you told is happening in different places.

The reason for banning photography is claimed under the Security of the shrine;

I really wonder whether prohibiting photography will help the protection of a place.

You are right in your observation @PaulPavlinovich

A few years back people had separate digital cameras and basic phones so still cameras and video cameras were charged on entry to a monument or shrine.

Now with smartphones with high-resolution cameras, the restriction has been lifted but some places may still not permit photography depending on their security concerns and policy. I haven’t come across a situation where a guard would allow someone to use a camera by taking a fee since that would be very obvious to other visitors who are not allowed to use a camera in the restricted area.

In the last few months, I have come across places that allow a smartphone and permit still-photographs but no video shooting.

A few other places allow still-photos and video shooting but no selfies since there were a high number of cases where people have endangered their life to take selfies at places like forts, etc.

When it comes to camera usage, I think they are more concerned about public safety than any security concerns about the PoI.
