GUPO SANDESH (Dessert) - First Branded Sandesh (Dessert) of Bengal

It’s considered by many to be first branded dessert( sandesh ) of Bengal is Gupo Sandesh.

About Gupo Sandesh: Gupo Sandesh is a soft dessert made from milk.

How is this dessert made: The cheese curds (Chhena in bengali language ) is wrapped in a large pan, filed with cloth, beaten with wood and excess water is expelled. The Gupo Sandesh is made by twisting and beaten cheese curds by hands. In winter , new molasses ( Nolen Gur or, Khejur Gur in bengali language) is mixed with cheese curds, at other times suger. Another name of this Sandesh (Dessert) is "Pair of Sandesh(Jora Sandesh in bengali language).

Guptipara & Gupo Sandesh: At Guptipara Sandesh (Desert) was made here even before the partition of bengal. When Calcutta (Now Kolkata) was not built,there was no railway, from then sweet and sandesh used to go to different places by boat from Guptipara. Different types of sweets were made along with Gupo Sandesh, Murki, Batasa, Mukha Sandesh , Bata Sandesh. At that time the whole of Calcutta was supplied with Sandesh(Dessert) from here.

Who Made Gupo Sandesh At Guptipara: There are few sweet shops at Guptipara who made Gupo Sandesh at present time.

How to reach Guptipara:

(A) By Train: The easiest way to reach Guptipara is by train. You can reach Guptipara from Howrah Junction railway station by “Katwa Local” trains and there are so many Katya local trains from Howrah ( perhaps every hour).

(B) By Road: The road will cross the Kalyani expressway, cross the Iswar Gupta bridge and take Ambika Kalna road.

Hey @BorrisS normally we bring Gupo Sandesh from local sweet shops and we have not prepared it at our home. Gupo Sandesh is popular at Guptipara and rest of West Bengal in India. There are some very popular sweets and dessert in India and which are Kheer, Gulab Jamun, Gajor Ka Halwa, Rasogolla or Rasgulla etc.
