Guadalajara ⚽ World Cup Host City

The World Cup Opening Match is less than 30 days away, today I’m sharing some interesting information about Guadalajara, one of the host cities in Mexico, alongside Monterrey and Mexico City.

This post is part of my Mexico 26 Guide: World Cup Edition

Guadalajara Stadium

The original name is Estadio Akron, during the World Cup each stadium will be named after the city they are located in, to avoid any confusion for fans traveling between so many cities. It has a shape inspired by a volcano, the exterior of the stadium is covered with grass to make it feel like it’s part of the natural landscape.

Capacity: Depending on the event it has a capacity up to 48,000 fans for a football match.

:wheelchair_symbol: Accessibility

It’s one of the most accessible venues in Mexico, the hall is located at ground level and the accessible seats are located right in front of the main entrance and all around the hall. If someone has a suite there are 9 elevators all around the stadium to get there easily. Exclusive restrooms for PwD are located also in the hall.

To meet FIFA regulations, the field has been modified and it now has a hybrid grass system, the natural grass has been reinforced with synthetic fibers for better durability and a perfectly flat surface to play.

Guadalajara Stadium will host 4 matches in the group stage, 2 of them were some of the most anticipated and most requested to get tickets for. Can you guess which ones?

Food and Drinks

Torta Ahogada: It’s a “drowned” sandwich in a tomato and chili sauce.

Restaurante Karne Garibaldi: This restaurant has a Guinness Record for “the fastest food service in the world” in just 13.5 seconds, the house special is “Carne en su jugo”, it’s a dish where the meat is simmered in a seasoned broth. When I visited it they took quite a bit more, 2:23 minutes not that fast lol.

Tequila Tour:*Mentally listening to the Tequila song melody* That’s right! You can visit Tequila, a Magic Town, one hour and a half away from the city. There is a tourist train that will get you there through an amazing agave plant landscape to visit the José Cuervo Tequila Factory (this is the Willy Wonka factory for mexicans if you ask me)

Things to do in the City :

:backhand_index_pointing_right: Here is a Google Maps list with more places.:backhand_index_pointing_left:

Historic Center

This is the heart of the city and its walkable , you can see the Guadalajara Cathedral, famous for its neo-gothic towers, Plaza de Armas and Rotonda de los Jaliscienses Ilustres.

Pro-tip: if you are able to, visit them during day and night, they have lights that make them look different and maybe during the world cup there will be video mapping shows.

FIFA Fan Festival

It will be located at**Plaza de la Liberación**(behind Guadalajara Cathedral), with lots of activities from sponsors, FIFA Store and a giant screen to watch matches.

Fuente de los Fundadores

This fountain has a 21 meter long image of the Foundation of Guadalajara.

Kartodromo Checo Pérez

This is the official circuit of the Mexican F1 driver Sergio “Checo” Pérez, and is really fun to race with friends.

How to get around

  • Light rail: It’s really fast to get around the city, you have to buy a card.

  • MiBici: Guadalajara has a bike-sharing system , you can buy a temporary pass at any station or use the app. Temporary passes are for 1,3 or 7 days with unlimited trips that have a time limit of 30 minutes each.

  • Uber and taxi

@LaloPadilla Beautiful city and a charming stadium. I was delighted by the fact that there are gardens along the sides of the stadium; this greatly helps with thermal insulation and protects the area from the river.

:smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Thats’s right @GasparKaren The stadium was built outside of Guadalajara City and has a lot of space for gardens, it’s relaxing to see so much green.

I hope more stadiums add gardens/trees instead of their concrete sufaces.

Gracias @Mc_Germi!

Sí, es todo un tema, Guadalajara tiene más población pero Monterrey le gana en territorio y economía.

Tequila es el Disneyland de los borrachos jajaja

El ambiente durante los partidos va a ser increíble :star_struck:
