Google Meet via Gmail

Recently, I logged into my gmail to check new emails and I was greeted with a pop up page.

I was excited about the update and couldn’t wait to see more features.

When I clicked on the Meet button it took me here

A step by step guide on how to join or start a new meeting. The next page gives you an assurance that your meetings are safe. No unknown visitors oror gate-crashers in thethe middle ofof important meetings!?

When you click on New Meeting option at the top left corner, you’d see four buttons at the bottom

  1. Get a meeting link to share

  2. Start an instant meeting

  3. Schedule in Google Calendar

  4. Close

LIKES

I like that two buttons email and meet can be alternated when I sign into my Gmail account.

I also love the options of joining or creating a new meeting without going to the app.

DISLIKES

Why can’t I just schedule a new meeting without going to the calendar?

Overall, this is apt and useful to me as I help to host regular meetings for different groups. I recently convinced my club to switch to Meet from Zoom. They loved the features and video format.

Oh, I also discovered that I can have less interruptions using Google Meet in my current location due to low Internet bandwidth compared to other video conference apps.

I use an android phone though, so it could be slightly different from IOS gadgets? Please share your experience with the new Gmail features.

If you haven’t tried out the Google Meet app then join one of the numerous virtual meetups hosted by Local Guides or join us monthly for the African Virtual Meetup Series where we tour countries in Africa to see the beauty they posses while we plan to choose a location for our First African Meetup!

Thank you Google for making life easier!

Oh yes @EmekaUlor i noticed this new google meet myself on gmail recently and love it. It was however on my computer only.

I use an Apple device and this feature is not available on gmail but on the google meet app which works very well.

Thank you @EmekaUlor for sharing this information with us.

This option in Family is very unusual and important.

@MrFreez try updating your email app and see if it would appear.

@helga19 you are absolutely correct. Family ties would become stronger during this physical distancing period.

As the saying goes Curiosity kills the cat. It doesn’t always kill it though. It may help the cat learn a trick or 2 for further adventures. Since @EmekaUlor posted his article about Meetup via Gmail I have been curious to try it out and see how it works seeing the New feature is open and available to all. So I planned a little virtual meet up with @MukulR on 22nd of August which was last Saturday and it worked out very well !!!

  • Only 2 of us in attendance as planned
  • We talked mainly about Ordinary Photos and 360 photos using a mobile phone.
  • The meetup lasted for about an hour.
  • Tried talking some pictures under his instructions during the meet up.

Yes!!! That’s the exact question or reaction I I waiting for How does it work???

It’s no rocket science really. It’s so easy and simple that I made use of it,therefore you can also :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: with these few simple steps:

  • Log in to your Gmail account and you’ll find these 2 icon as shown below;

  • click on the meet icon

You’ll get a new page as shown below

  • Click on the new meeting icon

It brings you the next page with the following footings;

At this stage there are 2 things you could do and it all depends on you as both are easy and straightforward.

  • You either click on “get a meeting link to share or start an instant meeting”.
  • In both cases you’ll get a code to share with the people you’ll like to invite.

…and your meet up is set.

These are the steps I followed myself and the meetup was quite good and helpful. Hope to organise a proper meetup soon sometime when I get the courage and inspiration to do so.

Have a great week ahead and cheers

It was really a great initiative from your side @SholaIB This trial online one to one meeting gave a lot of pleasure during my sickness. Thanks a lot for arranging this. I hope some of your photo taking problems are solved now. I think you are now ready to arrange a full virtual meet-up by using Google Meet. If you need any help, please feel free to let me know.

Best Regards

Google Meet is basically the big brother to Hangouts which it is replacing @SholaIB and it is quite easy to use. Its also integrated with Google Calendar so you can pre book a Meet in advance and invite others if you know their gmail addresses.

Note that it is recommended that you undertake private communication within Connect where participants need to abide by the Core Values.
