Google Maps locking up in Chrome on Desktop

Hello LGs. I have noticed lately that Google Maps is continually locking up at various times on desktop like after editing a review. After editing a review I get a blank screen locked with the updating spinning red circle continually spinning in the center of the blank screen as shown in the screen grab above. I’ve given Feedback on Maps about this but I’m just wondering if anyone else has had this same experience. I’ve found that the only way to get back control is to close down the browser and start again.

@AdamGT Same here. It’s been like this to me long time ago.

Intriguing problem @AdamGT

What’s the chrome version and which is the OS?

I am sure, you must have performed the routine steps for troubleshooting.

Even so, did you have a look at the chrome’s own task manager? Does that show very high consumption of memory for the Maps tab?

When any page becomes unresponsive, you can shut down that single tab through this browser task manager and need not close the entire browser.

Also, I suggest you use the new PWA for Maps which will isolate the process.

Further, is the experience the same in Firefox or Chrome-Edge?

@AdamGT

I normally use my handset to write reviews.

Reviews is not fun on systems. :slightly_smiling_face:

I don’t even see my points when I use my laptop to write.

Thanks for your reply @C_T

  1. My Google Chrome is up to date, Version 79.0.3945.130 (Official Build) (64-bit)
  2. Task Manager doesn’t show unusually high memory usage for the Maps tab.
  3. Yes I close the tab by ending the process in the Task Manager.
  4. I haven’t tried the new PWA for Maps

It is interesting that it is also happening to @Ant_Bad_Yogi and I wonder how many others are finding this problem. I have reported this problem via feedback in both Maps and Chrome.

Hi @Austinelewex

I do understand why you prefer to write your reviews on your handset (you get to see the points) and not desktop systems however in my case I was editing a previously created review.

Thanks for the clarification @AdamGT

I have one curiosity.
The screenshot shows a portion of a map from Europe.
However, if I go by the co-ordinates 4.2621103N, 15.4143048E (as appearing in the address bar), then the location happens to be someplace in Central African Republic & there isn’t any identifiable POI.
Are the GPS co-ordinates of the POI incorrect?

Very observant of you @C_T , I’m really impressed. To be honest I now cannot even remember the review I was editing let alone the co-ordinates but I will take more note next time this happens…stay tuned.

Hello @AdamGT

I was able to replicate your problem.
The coordinates are not for the POI for which you were editing the review.
When you pan the, view the coordinates transform, while the POI name still remains the same.

Further, while editing a review, if you click outside of the box, i.e. on the Maps, the edit goes for a toss.
The page may ask whether you want to save the changes.
However, even if we click yes, nothing happens.
Further, when you scroll the Maps while in edit mode, that changes the bearing & then the click on “Yes” sends the page in an infinite loop.

I had to refresh the page once again to get back to the menu.

@AdamGT ,

Yesterday was the first day I experienced exactly the same error as you reported. Mine only happens after I have edited an old review of mine. Or added some text to a star-only-rating. I need to open maps in a new tab to move on. You can’t just wait since the spinning wait-icon just stays on.

@sonnyNg , Are you taking action on this?

Cheers

Hi everyone,

Thanks for sharing the details on the situation!

I will make sure to check on it, as just to make sure to ease up the investigation, @Ant_Bad_Yogi , @AdamGT , @C_T , @MortenCopenhagen , would you mind share full details of the Device information (model, OS), as well as the current browser with the possible issue replicated on?

Hi @sonnyNg @C_T @MortenCopenhagen @Austinelewex @Ant_Bad_Yogi

There’s definitely a bug and now both @C_T and @MortenCopenhagen have confirmed my experience and as @C_T has described when editing a review. It will be easily replicated by @sonnyNg and his team. I’m on a Windows desktop using Chrome Version 79.0.3945.130 (Official Build) (64-bit) but I’m not at all sure that the device matters.

Hi @AdamGT ,

Thanks for clarifying! : ]

It must have been my old habit, should issues be related to mobile devices as well, regarding the inquiry of the device model.

For the moment, please stay tuned for any possible update.

Hi @MortenCopenhagen ,

Thanks for the details! : ]

Just to be sure, as you have mentioned, let’s say after closing the Google Maps window that is with the loading screen, after closing it and re-opening, it should be fine.

How often or would there be any specific pattern of to the issue to appear?

@sonnyNg , the freeze happens Every time after saving an edit to an existing review.

Closing the tab is enough to fix the problem. No need to restart Chrome. And other tabs are not affected. So to me, it seems to be a server-side issue.

And Yes after reopening maps in a new tab everything is working fine.

You should be able to easily reproduce this. If video is needed let us know.

Cheers

Hello @sonnyNg

I use OS Win10 64 bit version 1909 and Google Chrome 64bit 79.0.3945.130 (Official Build)

I edited one review 8 to 10 times.

I could replicate the locking only at two instances. That happened when I opened the review, panned the map, then clicked on the three dots and changed something. Here too, the freeze occurred only when I clicked outside the edit box on the map.
