Google Local Guides Basics: Get A New Business on the Map! 🗺️

Hey fellow Local Guides! :waving_hand: Adding a new business is exciting, and getting it visible on Google Maps is crucial. Some of these steps you can do as a Local Guide and the rest is up to the business owner. But you can always help guide them as well. Here’s how you can help a new business get seen:

1. Add the Business to Google Maps (For Local Guides & Business Owners):round_pushpin:

  • Head over to Google Maps.
  • Click a location on the map or drop a map marker.
  • Select “Add a missing place.”
  • Fill in all the details accurately: Business name, category, address, and contact information.
  • Double-check everything! Accuracy is key.

2. Claim and Verify the Business (For Business Owners Only) :office_building:

  • Search for the business on Google Maps.
  • Click “Claim this business” or “Manage now.”
  • Follow the verification steps. Google might offer options like phone, email, or even a video recording. Postcard verification can take up to 14 days. Be patient!
  • Verification proves you’re the real deal.

3. Communicate With The Business Owner About How To Optimize the Google Business Profile :sparkles:

  • Complete all sections: Add hours, photos, a detailed description, and services.
  • Choose the right categories: This helps customers find the business when searching for specific services or products.
  • Use high-quality photos: Show off the business’s best side!
  • Encourage reviews: Positive reviews boost visibility. :glowing_star:
  • Keep the profile updated: Add posts about offers, events, and news.

4. Tell Them To Be Patient! :hourglass_not_done:

  • It can take a few days to a couple of weeks for the business to show up on Google Maps after verification.
  • If it’s been longer than that, get them to double-check the information and consider contacting Google support.

5. Address Requirements:

  • A physical address is usually needed.
  • If it’s a service-area business (like a plumber), you can specify the areas served.
  • Ensure the address is formatted correctly and consistently throughout.

Why is this important?

A complete and optimized Google Business Profile helps businesses get found by local customers. It also builds trust and encourages engagement. As Local Guides, you play a vital role in helping businesses thrive! :flexed_biceps:

Hi @JordanBurleson,
Thank you for sharing these tips!

However, it’s important to clarify which steps should be taken by Local Guides and which - by business owners. Local Guides can certainly share helpful Google Business Profile Help articles with business owners (like this one) but they shouldn’t be the one to claim and manage businesses. This is against the Local Guides program rules.

Additionally, please remove the illustrations that include the Google Maps pin and logo. These are reserved for official use only as they’re part of the Google brand identity.

Thank you.

Thanks @DeniGu. The wording was ambiguous because I know Local Guides and business owners are both on here looking for advice. I believe it is clearer now with my edits!
