Girija Devi Temple, Garjiya, Uttarakhand, India

GIRIJA DEVI TEMPLE, GARJIYA, RAMNAGAR, UTTARAKHAND, INDIA:

Girija Devi Mandir (Temple) is a very famous Hindu temple which is situated in Garjiya, Ramnagar which comes in Nainital district in Uttarakhand state of northern India. This is very holy place, temple called local language in Garjia Mandir.

Girija Devi temple is situated in Garjiya at a distance around 14 km from Ramnagar on Dhikala road. It’s a sacred shrine where Garjiya Devi is the presiding diety.

The temple is built on a rock in the middle of river Kosi river and visited by thousands of devotees during Kartik Poornima, a Hindu holy day celebrated on the fifteen lunar day of Kartik (November- December). It is also known as the festival of lights of the Gods.

Devi Girija is the daughter of Himalaya and wife of Lord SHIVA. This temple was very less known till 1940 but in the recent years the strengths of devotees has increased to lakhs. The modern day temple was reconstructed in the year 1970. It’s believed that the rock on which the temple is located came down during a flood in river Kosi.

There is a 4.5 feet high idol of Girija Devi along with the idols of Devi Saraswati, Lord Ganesha and Batuk Bhairava. There is also a temple of LAXMI Narayan in the same temple premesis. The idols of this temple were found during excavation here. It’s believed that the prayers here are not complete until the devotee worships Bhairava after worshipping Girija Devi.

HOW TO REACH GIRIJA DEVI TEMPLE ?

Ramnagar is well connected through train and bus services, however you can book taxi for visiting the temple.

Nearest Railway Station: Ramnagar Railway Station, at a distance of nearby 15.5 km from Girija Devi Temple.

Nearest from Airport: Pantnagar Airport, at a distance of nearby 92.5 km from Girija Devi Temple.

Best Time Visit: November- December.

Nearest Hill Station: Ranikhet - 117 km

Nainital- 65 km

ACCESSIBILITY:

The temple has not a service of wheelchair accessible entrance so this place is not suitable for senior citizens and disabled people, however temple committe doing efforts to make accessible route for wheelchair.

Yeah it’s sacred place for Hindus in Uttarakhand, a state in north India.

The red coloured is shade for the stairs, there are several steps for visiting the temple.

Thank you for this great post, as usual! I really enjoy reading your posts because of the many details that you provide and the amazing photos.

I’ve never heard about this temple before, and the way it is built on a rock remind me some monastery’s in Greece in the region of Meteora.

When I look at the shops near the river, the first thought that comes to my mind is, aren’t they afraid of a flood!
