Jainism was also well respected by the Chandela kings. During the journey of Khajuraho I witnessed this sectarian oneness, and the presence of Jain temples are significant. Ghantai temple is an example which is located in the Eastern Group of Temples of World Heritage Site Khajuraho a renowned tourists attraction.
Ghantai Temple is located in the Eastern Group of Temples, in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh. It’s a Monument of National Importance. It was a Jain Temple, now turned to ruins. Still roof of hall and sanctum Sanctorum supported by stone pillars are presenting the glorious past. These stone pillars are decorated or carved with chains and bells motifs significantly, and these were used popularly in the Jain temples. Because of these motifs it’s known as Ghantai temple. It was built during the reign of Chandel Ruler Dhanga in the end of the 10th century. It was dedicated to First Jain Tirthankar Shri Adinath Jee. Almost square hall, gap or vestibule between hall and sanctum Sanctorum and the decorated doorframe of the sanctum Sanctorum having the Sculptures of dwarpala, graceful beauties, birds, animals and other Jain reliefs can be seen. Ceilings were also richly carved including the brackets and lintels. Of course it’s a ruined temple but it is a heritage and reflects the communal harmony. The Chandel rulers symbolizes and endorsed their faith in Jainism.
Sand stone was used in its construction and it’s a major attraction among all the tourits. It needs half an hour to finish the spectacular relief works and the nearest attraction is the Pasharvnath Temple.
