General Post Office in Nagpur

"Unlike us, the postal se**rvice was the only means of communication in the past. The postal system was never new to India; even before the arrival of the European colonies, the early rulers used their own legitimate postal system to transmit messages between ruling countries."

In the year 1688, a Post Office was set up in Bombay and then followed by similar ones in Calcutta and Madras. There were 889 Post Offices in 1861, handling nearly 43 million letters and over 4.5 million newspapers annually.

An initiative taken by the East India Company, to facilitate the emergence of Postal Services came into light in the eastern region of Maharashtra in 1921 as The General Post Office.

Situated in the heart of Nagpur-civil lines is a beautiful Victorian style two storied building. As most of the British era buildings, it has a load bearing structure consisting of brick walls, steel columns, beams and ribs enrolled in lime concrete with pitched roof in country tiles and patterns. Royal and rich in its own way.

The GPO at Nagpur is the mother of postal circle of central provinces. Being a scintillating example of British architecture, it was declared as the national heritage by the Indian Government in February 1994. Its construction was started in the year 1916 and was completed in 1921.

The clock at the top of GPO building till date works and it is maintained by Abdul Wahab, Baba watch service, Kamptee.

A pure heaven for stamp collectors is the Philately bureau started on 15th August 1948. This bureau at Nagpur is one among seven such bureaus present in Maharashtra state.

This bureau showcases collections since the 19th century, commemorating historic figures, landmarks and events.

Some of the rarest thematic collections in the district exhibiting postcards ranging from the Victorian era right up to 1947.

The oldest stamp issued was in memory of freedom fighter C. Rajagopalachari in 1954.

Another being the stamp of Mr. Sachin Tendulkar issued after the completion of his 200th Test Match on November 14, 2013.

The mere step of opening a PHILATELY ACCOUNT can get you the advantage of collecting the latest commemorative stamps.

My Stamp is a brand name for personalized sheets of Postage Stamps of Indian Postal services.

The Nagpur GPO is nothing short of a marvel.

Such a huge building for only a post-office is remarkable.

You have captured the photos very nicely @chetan_mange99

I especially like the clock-tower.
