Until early evening, the streets in Gaslamp Quarters of San Diego are abuzz with cards of all shapes, sizes, and attitudes.
Similar to the Times Square area of New York, Gaslamp Quarters is not a single lane or street. It is an entire neighborhood in San Diego, USA.
At dusk, they close off some lanes and convert them into a walk-only area called the ‘Walking Plaza’. This trend has caught up in Pune as well, in recent years.
Small businesses extend their seating areas onto the street in the parking space.
One can enjoy food by the roadside and engage in people watching.
Some artists play music for donations. These are decent versions of beggars, except they don’t ask for money for free.
This area traditionally had gas lamps on the streets a century ago, and that was how the name stuck.
Now they are replaced with similar-looking electric versions.
This area had an unusually large number of verbose instructions for literally everything from parking rules to driving instructions.
Also, I noticed that there were too many shops and places named Gaslamp in that area.
It is hard to believe that the Gaslamp Quarters in San Diego was once an infamous gambling den and brothel, and no it has transformed into a lively neighborhood.
I spent an entire evening here and enjoyed the famous San Diego-style pizza at Prince Street Pizza.
