GARGOYLES ON SAGRADA FAMILIA

You must have seen Gargoyles in many churches and other medieval structures. Some of the most famous gargoyles in the world sit atop cathedrals, such as Notre Dame in Paris…guess what they represent?

Their two main purposes were to scare off evil, and to divert rainwater.

The word “Gargoyle” originates from the old French word “Gargouille” meaning “throat”, it also describes the gurgling sound of water as it is coming down the downspout.

Ancient Egyptians usually created gargoyles in the shape of a lion’s head.

And here is one Gargoyle on the World famous Sagrada Familia. Barcelona. Spain

The Creator is Antoni Gaudi.

Gothic architecture represents gargoyles as grotesque or fantastical creatures.

Gaudi made them animals from the Mediterranean world. Snails. Serpents. Lizards. Geckos. Salamanders. Frogs.

You can identify which animal it is in this picture I took from the museum attached to Sagrada Familia.

@LeeBee-SA I think in cartoons, they made the Gargoyles into gentle creatures…not the grotesque and scary creatures.

Thanks for the intersting post @Indira_IllathuVala .Besides ‘wow’, the first thought that came into my mind when I first saw the Basilica of the Sagrada Família, was ‘it’s just unbelievable’. Like you I took many photos and the gargoyles were a plenty. Here are some snaps of the very top of the Basilica

@AdamGT @uavalentine The Wow factor is amazing for Sagrada Familia…but somewhere I felt too overwhelmed and over saturated with the detailing. Purely my personal opinion. No offence meant.
