Discover the Gard: 5 places to see first
I wanted to start my first post here by sharing a few places from a part of France I know particularly well: the Gard, in the south of France.
If you have never been here before, these are probably the five places I would recommend discovering first.
The Arènes de Nîmes

They are right in the heart of Nîmes and are probably the best introduction to the city. What I like most is that this almost 2,000-year-old Roman amphitheatre is not just a monument: it is still very much part of the life of Nîmes today.
The Maison Carrée

Just a few minutes away, the Maison Carrée is another must-see. It is remarkably well preserved and, in my opinion, one of the most elegant Roman monuments in France.
Nîmes is sometimes nicknamed “the French Rome”, and when you walk from the arena to the Maison Carrée, it is quite easy to understand why.
The Pont du Gard

This is probably the most famous place in the Gard.
Of course, the Roman aqueduct itself is spectacular, but I also really enjoy the landscape around it. Walking along the Gardon, especially outside the busiest hours, makes the visit much more enjoyable.
Uzès

Uzès is one of those small southern French towns where you can simply walk around without really needing a plan.
The old streets, stone houses, Place aux Herbes and the Duché give the town a very special atmosphere. If you can visit on a market day, even better.
Aigues-Mortes

Further south, Aigues-Mortes is completely different again.
The medieval walls are incredibly well preserved, and walking on the ramparts gives you beautiful views over the town, the Camargue and the surrounding salt marshes.
These five places are certainly not the most secret spots in the Gard, but I think they are the perfect introduction to the department.
