Ganga Aarti, Varanasi Overview
Ganga Aarti is an important ritual held on a grand scale every morning and evening on the banks of the holy Ganges. The priests perform the Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat. The entire Ghat gets illuminated with a divine light that can be felt strongly. The magnificent ritual involves huge brass lamps lit with oil and the priests chant the holy mantras that reverberate in the entire location.
As dusk descends, the ghats of Varanasi come alive with the vibrant Ganga Aarti. Priests, clad in traditional attire, choreograph the ritual with synchronized movements, accompanied by the rhythmic ringing of bells and chanting of hymns. Ganga Aarti starts at 5 am in the morning at Assi Ghat in Varanasi. In summer this aarti takes place from 5 am to 7 am and in winter from 5:40 am to 7:30 am. If you want to take a boat ride and have breakfast, the aarti is expected to end by 9 am.
Assi Ghat is one of the most important and famous ghats of Varanasi. This marks the end of Banaras Ghat. There is also a popular legend about Assi Ghat that Lord Rudra, a form of Lord Shiva, got angry and killed 80 demons at this place and hence this place became famous by the name of Assi.
