The last Ganpati was Guruji Talim mandal ganpati and later we saw small small mandals of the peth areas.

Guruji Talim Ganpati is Pune’s Manacha Tisra Ganpati — the 3rd Manache Ganpati. It is located around Ganpati Chowk on Laxmi Road, Budhwar Peth. (Kaal Panchang)

Why is Guruji Talim special?

1. It dates back to 1887
The Ganeshotsav here began in 1887, making it older than Lokmanya Tilak’s famous public Ganeshotsav movement of 1893. (Hindustan Times)

2. Hindu–Muslim unity is central to its history
The mandal was founded through the participation of Hindu and Muslim families associated with the local talim. Historical accounts mention families of Bhiku Pandurang Shinde, Nanasaheb Khasgiwale and members of the Nalband family. (Hindustan Times)

This is why Guruji Talim is particularly associated with Hindu–Muslim unity and communal harmony in Pune’s Ganeshotsav history. (Loksatta)

Why “Talim”?

A talim was a traditional wrestling and physical-training centre. Guruji Talim was originally connected with such a wrestling institution, and the Ganpati was initially installed inside the talim. As the area developed, the celebrations shifted to the public space around Ganpati Chowk/Laxmi Road. (Kaal Panchang)

So the name literally preserves the memory of an old wrestling-training centre of Pune.

Why is it the 3rd Manacha Ganpati?

Guruji Talim has occupied the third position in Pune’s traditional Manache Ganpati immersion procession since 1950. (The Indian Express)

A distinctive procession

Guruji Talim’s Ganpati traditionally arrives in a rath/chariot during the procession, while the first two Manache Ganpati traditionally use palkhis. Its procession is also known for dhol-tasha, nagada and traditional musical elements. (The Indian Express)

Tambdi Jogeshwari Ganpati, Pune

Shri Tambdi Jogeshwari Ganpati is the Manacha Dusra Ganpati — 2nd of Pune’s five Manache Ganpati. It is in Budhwar Peth, within the historic precinct of the Tambdi Jogeshwari temple. The public Ganeshotsav tradition here dates to 1893. (Pune Ganpati Darshan)

Why is it special?

1. Ganpati of Pune’s Gramdevi

The older shrine is dedicated to Goddess Jogeshwari, traditionally regarded as Pune’s Gramdevi (guardian goddess). This gives the Ganpati a much older religious setting than the public Ganeshotsav itself. (Kaal Panchang)

3. A very distinctive idol

The Ganpati is known for its unusual elongated, elephant-like facial features, reddish appearance and ornate silver setting. The traditional form has been preserved by the Gulunjkar sculptor family, reportedly across four generations. (Kaal Panchang)

The temple is much older

The Tambdi Jogeshwari temple predates the 1893 public Ganeshotsav. Historical traditions associated with the shrine go back centuries, and the temple is an important heritage landmark in the old-city area. (Kaal Panchang)

A unique annual tradition

Tambdi Jogeshwari Ganpati — Manacha Dusra Ganpati of Pune
