Gandhi reached Jayag bazar Sonaimuri on 29 January 1947. Hemantakumar Ghosh, a local zamindar and the first barrister of Noakhali district, donated his immovable property to the Mahatma Gandhi established the ‘Ambika-Kaliganga Charitable Trust’ and registered a deed to that effect. An ammoktarnama was executed in favor of Charu Chowdhury, who was dedicated to public welfare. Development activities started with full enthusiasm for the benefit of the local people. Mahatma traveled to different parts of Chandpur, Lakshmipur and Noakhali for four months. This is the road maps of his travel.

Locally most of the Funny popular story here about Gandhi’s travel. Gandhiji brought a goat with him when he came here and it got stolen after he came here. Me and my friend came across this picture while visiting this museum where there is a picture of Gandhiji with a goat.

In addition to multi-faceted activities for socio-economic development, there is a collective effort of all to retain the memories of Gandhi. Here, various types of clothes are made by hand-operated spinning wheels and looms by the work-oriented women. Gandhiji himself used the spinning wheel to make yarn and cloth from cotton and wear clothes. In order to preserve his memory, the Gandhi Ashram Trust still produces yarn and looms. By participating in this work, local women are bringing back the financial well-being of their families. Now Khadi cloth and other indigenous cloths including clothes and other goods are going to the showrooms of various reputed companies outside the district.
