Gambang Kromong Traditional Music from Jakarta - Mom As A Local Guide Series

Betawi is a native tribe in Jakarta, so first I will tell you about the traditional music from Betawi AKA Jakarta. It is Gambang Kromong.
The name Gambang Kromong comes from the names of two percussion devices, namely Gambang and Kromong.

The combination of indigenous and Chinese elements is very evident in this music, the Chinese elements physically appear on the stringed instrument, tehyan, kongahyan, and sukong.

At first the Gambang orchestra only favored Chinese peranakans, namely the Chinese in Betawi. Then the Gambang orchestra became known as the gambang kromong orchestra.

Today’s development in Gambang kromong has the term Gambang kromong original and Modern.

Original Gambang Kromong is gambang kromong with traditional musical instruments. As for the Modern of gambang kromong, gambang kromong, whose musical equipment is added or combined with modern Western musical instruments, is sometimes electronic such as melodic guitar, bass, organs, saxophone, drums and so on. The addition of the instrument did not feel disturbing.

Even the gambang kromong sound color is still heard and the entry of pop songs takes place naturally. Gambang kromong Modern are generally owned by groups that have a relatively strong economy.

I recorded this video, you can hear Gambang Kromong Original and also Gambang Kromong Modern and also 360 video. Enjoy!

@Ddimitra It’s always nice to watch traditional music performances like this. Makes us more in love with our culture.

Like when I participated in a meet up at the Indonesian Music Museum, I was able to watch and record live performances of traditional music with original instruments from Kalimantan called Sape '. Like the sounds of nature that are endless to enjoy.

Gambang Kromong, Betawi’s traditional music. But sadly, now it’s not only rare, but also getting extinct, swallowed by the modernity.
