This monolithic stone sculpture depicting the slaying of Gajasura is marvelous and has been procured from Chaurasigarh a historical fort located within the Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary of Rajputana Kingdom, District Mandsaur, Madhya Pradesh, and on the basis of the symbols and art used in the carving, it’s estimated to have been sculpted in the 11th century AD.
The Gajasura-samhara sculpture of Shiva represents the Pauranic legend of the slaughter of the demon Gajasura by him. According to the legend, being afraid of Gajasura, divinities approached to Shiva and sought relief from this grief. Shiva on there request Slayed Gajasura and protected them from Gajasura’s terror. The sculpture is a unique représentation of Gajasura samhara by the Shiva.
In this sculpture, Shiva has ten arms, holding various weapons in each arm. As here Shiva is evidently shown holding trident, macehead, damru, skin of elephant, shield, Khatvanga, and the skull cup in his hands. The artist has nicely illustrated the demon Gajasura turned in human form after getting hurt and hanging on the trident of Shiva and begging for life with hand gestures.
Shiva shown in Virasana has the right foot on the back of apasmara purusha means demon. The goddess Chamunda is visible in the left corner of this sculpture. This sculpture’s many fragments are damaged but the subject of this Sculpture can be understood easily.
