Fussen for nature lovers

In October 2019, I took a trip to German Alps towns. For this trip, I visited Fussen, Oberstdorf and Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Most places that I visited are nature destinations. For this post, I will introduce you to “Fussen for nature lovers”. Here is my experience, so come along with me.

1. Lechfall

This waterfall is one of the hidden gems in Fussen. The views are really amazing and the color of the river itself is awesome. The best part is that it is only 1.5 kms from Fussen train station. It is about 15 minutes walk from the station.

Fun Fact - Do you see those steps in the cover photo? Yes, this Lechfall is a man-made waterfall.

2. Forest Experience Center Ziegelwies

The highlight of this Forest Experience Center is Baumkronenweg, an amazing tree top walk. This tree top path is 480 meters long and 21 meters high. The views of tree tops, Lech river, surrounding mountains and landscape are fabulous.

Fun Fact - You can walk from Germany to Austria on this tree top walk. ? See photo below. ?

3. Kalvarienberg

It takes about 30 minutes hiking from Lechfall to reach this nice viewpoint. On the top, you will find one of the great photo points of the Füssen old town and the Neuschwanstein castle. The trail is surrounded by forests and it is really worth the effort.

Tips - About the mid way, there is a chapel and some benches. It is nice to take a rest and take some photos at this point.

4. Alpsee

This lake is really close to Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles. It takes about 90 minutes to walk around the lake. Me? It took like 2 hours and a half to walk around this lake as I stopped many times for taking photos. Along the trail, you will find the awesome landscape and nice photo spots of both castles.

Tips - Bring some snacks. There are some benches and open areas you can take a rest and have a small picnic.

5. Tegelberg

The Tegelberg upper station is one of the popular areas for both locals and visitors. There are many hiking trails in the area. The views of Alps, lakes and landscape are fabulous. The easiest way to reach the top is riding the Tegelberg cable car.

Tips - If you stay in Fussen, you will get a guest card from the landlord. With this card, you can ride the public buses in Ostallgau region for free and you will get a small discount for Tegelberg cable car as well.

More tips

  1. If you would like to visit these places, I would suggest you to spend at least 2 days. You can find a lot of accommodations in Fussen.
  2. Bring some cash. At least you need it when using the public toilets.
  3. Get Bavaria day ticket for unlimited rides on public transportation (regional trains, S-Bahn and U-Bahn trains, trams, buses) in the Bavaria region.

What kind of places do you visit when you are on a vacation?

Hi @Ant_Bad_Yogi

Interesting report from german part of Alps.

Autumn is the best seazon for hiking and photography. Your pictures are beautiful and colorfull.

Just I recommend a little less adjustment sometimes the color is exaggerated.

@KarolT Thank you for the compliments. Yes, you are right, Autumn is best for hiking and photography. Actually the colors in my phone are already beautiful, but when I look at the photos in laptop, the colors are faded. OK, next time I will use “Auto” for the filter. Thank you so much for your recommendation.

What a wonderful photo shoots. It is now imperative that you’re a hidden professional photographer taking amazing pictures taking advantage of natural lights.

Pertaining to Lechfall, I can’t believe it is manmade. :slightly_smiling_face: cool.
