Funny and Awkward places I often come across while mapping

When I browse through places near me I come across tens of these funny POIs. I want to know what’s your standard action for this kind of place. I most possibly report them under spam and misleading. Wherever possible I correct the name and categories but lots of such edits fail and get rejected. Google itself knows that these kinds of places are just bad data and serve no purpose and hardly show them to the public. They are only visible when people zoom in maps to maximum level.

And lots of these places are purposefully created by people without much purpose.

In the first one there is a small typo though it says Hear instead of heart while other ambiguities I see is it’s marked under doctor category while it being q clinic secondly it’s heavily posted with Pathological labs  in all and all its very confusing.

Here in this one you can see Police Traffic Van being categorised as office accessories Wholesaler :person_shrugging:t2::male_sign: none of them is correct.

While in this one a shop without any information put under preschool category

Here is the funny one reads in Hindi Kaku stays here under the category of school

There were lots of other funny and awkward places I couldn’t take screenshot of and got deleted. In India lots of these places make to news in social media channels because of their peculiar names I have shared a few in my other posts.

By the way what you do with such awkward places.

Manches ist schon schlimm, ich denke es gibt Nutzer die wahllos Orte erstellen nur um Punkte zu bekommen.

Ich bin eigentlich immer froh wenn ein Ort schon vorhanden ist und sich als richtig erweist.

Here is my take.

Fix the typo. Doctors can be difficult to edit. You could ask the owner or the Maps Support Forum for help if it is not approved. (Update: I see you have fixed the typo: https://maps.app.goo.gl/XigQgq5SJXF8btiWA).

The others would need a bit of investigation before removing them. If they have not photos and no reviews and no phone number or Web address, I would most likely remove them as Doesn’t exist here.

If in any doubt I would check street view (don’t for get to check when the latest street view was recorded. And maybe other internet resources like the free national phone directory or business directory.

But as you are hinting most if not all 4 are most likely added by someone not knowing what they are doing or someone wishing to have some fun.

When I see such odd pins around here I don’t hesitate for long just to remove them.

Keep in mind the difference between “Doesn’t exist here” and “Permanently closed”. If a place was genuine and it closed, please don’t use “Dosen’t exist here” because all traces will be deleted from the database.

Cheers

@MortenCopenhagen Well I was talking about mapping in India and mostly these kind of POIs exist in the areas which are narrow streets with no street view and any other database. And what I have learned from past experience that it’s very difficult to update categories sometimes and also marking something as misleading and spam, such edits gots lots of rejections. However when you say doesn’t exist here I’m confused if it’s the most valid action. Does it mean the place exist but somewhere else ? Then the location must be updated.

Doesn’t exist is the option to use if a pin has no historic value. A business with a bunch of photos and reviews should be Closed permanently and not by choosing Does not exist here. By chosing Closed Permanently users will be able to find the photos and reviews in the future. If you use Doesn’t exist here everything will be wiped from the database.

Please use Moved to a new location when that is the case.

I hope this helps.

@VishalSaini good. I didn’t do it then I just fixed the name and avoided correcting category coz I have noticed when I make multiple correction for 1 POI. Only one of the gets okayed others get rejected .

Don’t do multiple edits in on POI, do that one by one as you are not expert of mapping, before giving approvals to edits, moderation system checks the trust level & expertise’s!

@VishalSaini thanks I see something wrong or incorrect I do my best to correct it in the form it gets approved easily. I have observed some specific edits always have trouble. Do you have specific rejection or approval rate for your edits or post related to that I can read .

Q) Do you have specific rejection or approval rate for your edits or post related to that I can read .

Ans: I have highest edits in the world! or you can say “No.1” of this world! Every year i give highest edits in the World! My approval rate by moderation & Auto approval is 99.9%, rest is due to technical issues.

Have you ever listened this before? Have you ever heard the names of any senior mapper since 7 years and their contributions! That is due to Biased policies & Corrupt employees of Google! Today i have given 44th reminder to them, So you can assume what is going on!

Google engineers works under the pressure of Local Guide Connect team, that the major reason of Spam!

@VishalSaini well if that’s the case it’s pretty discouraging. I don’t think that’s what an expert want to face with his contributions now and then. I hope things get with time now.

That’s the reason i am here! Now water is going above the heads of seniors and hard working mappers due to Corrupt & Biased Local guide Connect team, since 2016 we are seeing the same things happening again and again, Guiding stars 2022 is the just a small example of that, in Contributor Conversation 2022 they told attendees you are going to be a next guiding stars but under the pressure of some corrupt Google Official they had changed the whole list! That topic is also available in Local Guide Forum written by 2 Local Guides!

You cant believe that since 7 years, engineering team have not resolved any issue submitted by me which i send them Every day/Every week, through send product feed back, they only resolve the issues of selected Guiding Stars/Top Local Guides etc. under the pressure of Local Guides Connect team who force them to do that without seeing the mapping/other guidelines!

Some guidelines are here:

https://support.google.com/contributionpolicy/answer/7401426?hl=en-GB&ref_topic=7422769&sjid=8817087637904370884-AP

https://support.google.com/contributionpolicy/answer/7411351?hl=en-GB&sjid=8817087637904370884-AP#zippy=%2Ccontent-and-formats%2Cstylistic-adjustments%2Csuperimposed-text-or-graphics

Two times auto selected official is involved in violating guidelines but she was Official of local Guides Connect team so she could select her self again and again for USA and other officials were also doing the same things!, cant write name here its violate the guidelines due to privacy, some times i really laugh on these types of guidelines!

Others cant fight for issues because they are not experts, wait wait wait…i am giving you a reply, because google maps moderation team under the guidelines of Corrupt & Biased engineering team starts giving Wrong Denials; Wrong denials means - Trust level “Zero” or you could be black listed

Last but not the least, I will change the things because i have nothing to lose! Stay tunned

These are interesting finds @Trail_blazer . When I’m using the app, I’ll tick the ‘Dont know, but this is incorrect’ box if something is really perplexing. Name edits are quick and simple to do. You did the right thing by checking the photos to confirm the typo. The other name with the  in it is an immediate fix, as emojis are not appropriate for POI names.

@JustJake 6-7 years ago my reviews were gone hidden because I used emojis in them but it was like one or two short words and an emoji. But now we can react with emojis on the review and disability and accessibility emojis are big part of reviews today but I remember my reviews being flagged even for these accessibility emojis then. As far as name of a POI is concerned its a name and, brand name are getting lots of varieties these days and I’m sure some cafes and shops will definitely have emojis in their name and someday even emojis in name would be allowed.

It is funny how we’re now encouraged to use emojis in the reviews, @Trail_blazer . That was a complete departure from the old ways.

With business names, I’m seeing these mostly used as a way to get them to stand out on the map.

@JustJake There are lots of

  • Text + Numbers

  • Numbers

  • Number+ Symbol + Text

Emojis would be a lil too much but I see it happening. In marketing its all about being unique and standing out. If you suggest Karigari name to some bunch of guys in your team or general public. Most would reject it, calling it a big mis match but it worked here in India
