If you’re driving in the south of Spain, head to the Tabernas Desert near Almeria in Andalusia. This is Europe’s largest desert (ok, there aren’t many) and is also home to an extraordinary film set called Fort Bravo or Texas Hollywood. Numerous movies have been shot here: Hollywood westerns (including Clint Eastwood greats such as A Fist Full of Dollars), spaghetti westerns, Lawrence of Arabia and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
There is a Wild West fort and town, saloon where you can get a drink and watch a cabaret, a Mexican pueblo, a couple of gallows, everything you need for your western.
If you’re travelling by motorhome or camper, you can stay overnight, overlooking the arid desert hills. Electricity and water are technically provided but the electricity has a non-standard plug and the water is a dribble. but that doesn’t matter because it is a real experience to be camping there after the visitors have left.
