Fried rice
with Deviled prawns and fried Kankun
It is a very common and relatively cheap meal in Sri Lanka
Its served as a Chinese dish but heavily Sri Lankan infused to suit the local palate
( the bottle you see is a Genger Beer ( Elephant house Ginger Beer = EGB) a local carbonated beverage
Thank you @MdSharifHossen for that awesome pictures. Everything looks really tasty although I don’t exactly know what the ingredients are haha. I should visit a bangladeshi restaurant one day ![]()

Hi @ValeriaA @Osaka78forTRUMP @MdSharifHossen @ultra71 @JibinPaul
My dish for the day
Hoppers
a Sri Lankan breakfast or dinner delicacy.
its made out of rice flour and coconut milk, outer line is crisp while the middle is thicker and sponge like.
it is prepared plain ( above main ingredients ) or with
eggs- by breaking an egg over the middle. it looks like a fried egg ( sunshine )
people also add some sugar syrup or palm treacle to the rice and coconut mixture to prepare Pani Appa (Sweet Hoppers).
Sweet Hoppers are usually prepared for evening tea
Plain and Egg hoppers are eaten with Lunui Miris ( chili and Sault paste ) or Katta sambol ( Maldive fish added to Chili past).
You can also eat it with hot curries like fish curry or a meat curry.
weet hoppers are usually .Very interesting dish @Prasanna-Aryaprema ! It looks tasty. Is it like a pancake or kinda like an omelette but without filling? Do you cook it at home?
Thanks for sharing!!

Yes, the middle comes out like a pancake while the outer round is crisp.
The secret in making outer line crisp is that the walls of the pan make the batter ( like pancake mixture) drip towards the middle leaving a thin film on the outer wall of the pan and a thicker layer in the middle. it raises a little coz of the baking soda added to the mixture
yes, we do make it at home. it is common and unique Sri Lankan meal you can find at any Sri Lankan community get-togethers or food stalls abroad. try to visit one at your country they will surely have it irrespective of the time even though its served at breakfast or dinner here,
cheers
Prasanna
Thanks @Prasanna-Aryaprema for clarifying. It seems to be really tasty, I would love to try it! I will search if there’s any sri lankan restaurant in my area and for sure I’ll go and share my experience with you ![]()

Hi @ValeriaAumasque,
Great topic and I see the discussion developed a lot. Lots of Local Guides are sharing their favorite foreign food. I don’t have pictures of the food I love that is not from my country, but here is a list of my top foreign dishes:
- Greek Gyros (lamb meet with salad in pita bread) and Souvlaki (meat screw). I travel to Greece every summer so I’m always enjoying these two, besides the seafood.
- Italian Gelato. It is not an ordinary ice-cream that you can buy from the local store. Italians know how to make the best ice-cream.
- Spanish Paella. As a seafood lover Paella is one of my favorite. Also, if I go to Spanish restaurant I always want to try every kind of tapas that they serve.
Enjoy exploring foreign food,
Marin
Hi @ValeriaA ,
Which part of Italy you are travelling to? I’ve been to Rome and there you can find Gelato on every corner. You should try different tastes, my favorite is pistachio.
I’m a big fan of Greek cuisine. The cuisines on the Balkans are very influenced by each other but there are some specific foods you can find in Greece. And they are masters of seafood.
I wish you have a great time in Italy and we will be waiting for the recap of your travel, including photos please. ![]()
Cheers,
Marin
