A couple of sundays ago took place in Rosario , Argentina the most important derby match, and also called a Classic ( Clasico) of the interior of Argentina, so important it is that many people it compares to the BocaJuniors - River Plate one and even dare to say that it is bigger in passion and importance ( ).-
Rosario Central and NEWELL’S OLD BOYS are the most important teams in the city.
Of course they are natural rivals and divides the town in two pieces.
The passion is so high that for example three weeks before the match in all the family and friends meetings and “ASADO” the most important topic is the trascendental match.
The match took place in Rosario Central’s Stadium, called The Arroyitos’s Giant ( El Gigante de “Arroyito” ) cause is the neighbourhood where the stadium is, very close to the Paraná River . (See River Paraná Aquarium)
I’am a Rosario Central supporter , so I went in this opportunity with my older son to the stadium to feel again this unique sensation of supporting your favourite team.
Suddenly you encounter with 45.000 (most of them dressed in Yellow- Blue) people in the stadium singing all togheter supporting songs, for the 90 minutes that lasts the match, and you can feel how the structure of the bulding starts to vibre, and you can only hear all the people singing one song! A really incredible experience.
The match ended in a draw 1-1, and we went home with a bitter taste cause we need to win as local, to earn more points. ( win 3 points/ draw 1 point each team/ lose 0 points), but with the passion for Rosario Central intact.
Nice post. I am also a football fan so I enjoyed it. My favorite team is Slavia Prague :).
So the biggest derby in Argentina is between two clubs from Rosario? That is quite surprising for me I would expect both teams or at least one of them to be from the capital city.
BTW: Newell’s Old Boys is the team where Messi was playing before going to Barcelona right?
Hey @SebaasC thank you for sharing. Light side of connect. I love football. One of the greatest el classico is Real Madrid and Barcelona. I am a Los Blanco fan (international) and an Enyimba supporter (Nigeria).
Argentina is a world football giant producing top players over generations like Brazil. Boca Juniors is also know here and it is nice to see lovely photos, stadium and fans troop out to support their clubs.
I want to see Nigeria football grow to this height in terms of fans coming out to watch games.

My heart is in Rosario( the second or maybe the third city in Argentina). I feel (like a lot people) that the passion in the Classics here it doesn’t compares to other in Argentina.
The teams in Buenos Aires are bigger in supporters, ( the people who lives in smalls towns but in other regions of the country and far away from BA are from Boca or River too) so this is one important difference.
Yes, Lio Messi started here in Rosario when he was a child in this club after left Argentina and went to Spain.
Another thing that maybe you don’t know is that Maradona played in Newell’s too a few matches at the end of his career.
