FOOD TOUR of Alleppey

Hi all Local Guides. I wanted to take a post to promote the local food available in the small town of Alleppey, a quaint and handy settlement along the man-made canals of central Kerala. Although the place has been unexplored in its beauty, it packs a heavy punch in terms of the food in store. Some of the most notable delicacies I’ve had in my life are from Alleppey.

I went on a feeding frenzy last weekend around the town, just succumbing to my crazy hunger to try something new.

Firstly, breakfast from BROTHERS HOTEL was on top of the itinerary. Their Fish masala (made with seer fish) is above and beyond the classical coconut-mashed turmeric dish. Accompanied with the traditional hot-toasted bowl-shaped appams is a real buzz in the morning.

Biriyani would be most people’s favorite lunch out here, and Alleppey isn’t anything short when it comes to cooking up a great pot of it. Lunching at the HALAIS gave me the pleasure of tasting the fried and masala pieces of meat infused into the buttery and flavorsome rice. One portion of full biriyani is almost enough for two people.

At 4óclock, along the beach-route of Alappuzha, was the interesting CHAIWALLAH food kiosk. Talk about street vending in style. The retro-themed, pop-music kiosk was another real indulgence along the landscape. Their Darjeeling tea and snacks on a seat along the canal edge can really cook up some stories of nostalgia.

The BREWS & BURGERS bistro is not an inclination to any of the local cuisine, but a delightful deviation from the traditional. For dinner, their Chicago Burger was packed with 2 layers of grilled chicken slices and sauces. But, the star was the 4x4 Monster Burger- brimming and towering 4 layers of beef and 4 layers of cheese, alternating with each other. Their peri-peri fries was yet another spicy surprise.

All-in-all, the town really assures a treat to a foodie and does justice to all our cravings. I hope this interests foodies in Alleppey and outsiders to visit the small town.
