First Time visitor to New York NYC, and in WINTER Jan 2020

What would you recommend for a first time visitor to New York to do/see/eat during winter (Jan 2020)?

i enjoy walking, outdoor, and visiting outdoor stores such as REI.
Foodwise - I am not picky and enjoy exploring. Only have 3 nights though.

Never been to NYC, not to mention it would be freezing…

Hey @LikWONG ,

You will fulfil a dream of mine - to visit New York City! I wish you a pleasant stay there. If I were you, I would search on the internet for the most interesting places to visit during the winter. You can also search the community before posting as others may have asked your question (and received an answer) already.

I am tagging @marcorp as I know he’s been in New York and could give you some tips.

@LikWONG Don’t feel discouraged about creating new posts with regards to travel advice. That’s what this board is made for, and old posts might not be relevant anymore.

I don’t live in NYC but I’ve been there once before, but unfortunately I didn’t get to explore much. I’m a big gamer though, so I made sure to visit the Nintendo store, which was the only official Nintendo store in the world before they opened one in Tokyo recently. I also got a chance to dine at the first pizzeria in US, Lombardi’s. Keep in mind the often have long lines, so might to take that into account since waiting outside in the cold weather is definitely not fun. Really delicious pizza though. Some things to be considered if you’re interested in these.

@MoniDi Searching internet is great, but more often than not, you’ll find touristy stuff that most people already know and familiar with. Personally for me, in addition to touristy stuff, I would love to also find places that locals usually go to. I think here on Connect, on the Travel board is perfect for these kind of questions, don’t you think? :slightly_smiling_face:

Tagging NYC Local Guides @TraciC and @Charlie_S if maybe they can offer more suggestions

Thank you @iyudhi :slightly_smiling_face:
Lombardi’s has been mentioned in other posts too! will certainly give a chance to try it out!

Hey @iyudhi ,

Of course I like to explore the small streets and the unknown places in the big city but most of all I would love to see the Christmas tree at the Rockefeller Center. I mentioned that to @marcorp in one of his posts as it’s a dream of mine ever since I was a child. Perhaps I will look for a nice restaurant where I can enjoy a lovely dinner. I must admit that I am not a huge fan of pizza and pasta. :slightly_smiling_face:

Thank you for the detailed reply and tips.

Oh, @MoniDi , if you come visit, I’d be happy to help you plan! :slightly_smiling_face:

@LikWONG Welcome to planning a busy three days in NYC and thanks for sharing about what you’d be most interested in seeing! Don’t worry about the cold (well, dress for it), as you’ll be so busy, you’ll stay warmer! Here’s my NYC Places to Visit list that I share with everyone.

Breaking down your post, here’s what I recommend:

You said: i enjoy walking, outdoor, and visiting outdoor stores such as REI.

I say: Definitely visit Central Park to see the gorgeous statues and gardens, especially: Bethesda Fountain and Strawberry Fields . Be sure to visit Chinatown, Little Italy and that whole area for great street art like these pieces.
You said: Foodwise - I am not picky and enjoy exploring. Only have 3 nights though.

I say: Here are a few of my lists: Best Chinese Food in NYC

There may even be a meet-up when you’re in town, so keep an eye on g.co/localguides/meetup! Have so so much fun when here!
