Finding Jiu Jitsu Gyms While Traveling

I get a chance to travel a few times a year, which I enjoy a lot, and a few years ago I started training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) in my home town of Evanston, IL. With the two hobbies combined, I often find the need to train while I’m out on vacation or traveling for work. This definitely requires some planning to squeeze in class or a seminar during a family trip or a busy business schedule, not to mention packing of some additional gear, such as: gis, belt and rashguards.

I like to train while traveling for a couple of reasons. First, I don’t want to miss the valuable training time while I away from home and second, I like training at different schools and with new people. You can always learn some new tricks and moves from instructors and students from around the world. There is nothing better to find a winning move that works for you and bring it back home to my home gym at Serafin BJJ in Evanston.

Before leaving on vacation, I always map out the BJJ gyms around my hotel or BnB and reach out to the gyms ahead of time to setup a visit. After training, I am sure to give a shout out to the owner and leave reviews of the gyms on Google Maps for others to know where to train while in town. I do this because I appreciate when others map and review gyms around different areas, as I rely on that information to plan my trip and training.
