Festivals-Food and Health

This post is part of @AjitThite home made food challenge #KHAANA KHAZAANA

In Tamilnadu there is a saying UNAVE MARUNDHU which means FOOD IS MEDICINE. In India food plays an important role during Festivals. In the above picture there are 3 food items, banana and milk. The speciality is that all the above 3 items are uncooked food. Recently known as FIRELESS COOKING.

Very simple but very healthy foods. They are as follows

  1. Till seeds balls
  2. Rice flour balls
  3. Green dal sprouts

Ingredients and Preparation

  1. Till seeds balls (Sesame seeds)
Ingredients required - Sesame seeds one cup and jaggery powder one cup
Preparation - First put the Sesame seeds in a mixie jar, grind it coarsely. Then add the jaggery powder in the mixie jar and grind it for just 2 minutes. Transfer this into a bowl, mix and knead it and rorate then it into balls.

These balls have high nutrition values. Very rich in iron. It is said 2 balls a month will keep the diseases away including cancer.

  1. Rice Flour balls
Ingredients - one cup rice flour, (rice grounded into dry powder), half cup jaggery powder, half cup water
Preparation- mix jaggery powder and water and make it into jaggery water (Panakam). Then in a bowl put the rice flour add the jaggery water to it. Mix it into a smooth dough, knead and make it into balls.
These rice flour balls gives the necessary carbs and jaggery water is rich in iron. This is an energy food.

3.Green Gram Sprouts
Ingredients - One cup green gram and water to soak
Preparation - A day before wash and soak the green gram in water. The water level should be double above the quantity of green gram. Leave it for 8 hours. Then drain the water completely. Then cover it with a lid. The next morning the green gram sprouts will be ready. That is the required time is 8 hours for soaking and 8 hours for sprouting.
This has a very rich fibre content and has high protein.

When the above 3 foods are consumed with banana and milk, this becomes a wholesome food.

Festivals are based on the concept of fasting and feasting. Some festivals are meant for feasting and some for fasting. During the fasting festival a healthy food pattern is advised.

During festivals PRASAD (food offered to God) should be prepared in home in a clean environment. We have to get from bed early. Take bath follow some simple rituals and prepare the PRASAD. The above foods are prepared during October or November i.e. KARTHEEKA month of Indian calendar. This time it it good to consume foods made out of jaggery. This festival is known as Naga Chaturthi. No other foods should be consumed on that day, except the above foods.

All the festivals are based on the concept of PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE.

I finish this post with one health tip “எளெச்சவனுக்கு எள்ளெக் கொடு, கொளழுத்தவனுக்கு கொள்ளெக் கொடு”

Which means give Sesame to a lean person and give Horsegram to a fat person.

Hoping that you will benefit by this post. Thanks for @AjitThite for bringing out this Challenge.

Thanks @Supriyadevkar , that you liked the post. The last line is very effective way either to reduce or gain weight.

@Gurukrishnapriya mam you’re my saviour  whenever I see your post there’s a ting of Tamil, this time it is “Unave Matunthu”. I would appreciate if it’s in தமிழ் itself.

I loved your recipes, We also do the same with sweet potatos, palm jaggery and shredded coconut. If not tried before definitely I would recommend you to.

Thanks for inspiring mam :folded_hands:t2:

Thanks for your compliments @MathanVibranarayan I feel overwhelmed. I wrote the last verse in Tamil. Sweetpotato should be cooked right. I will definitely try this. Tamilnadu is famous for it’s healthy cuisine.

Oh I am so sorry for replying late here, @Gurukrishnapriya mam.

Of course, any dish for health is the best to know, perticularly during the festival as we tend to eat more sweet .

I like it and thanks for adding a special one for my series #khaanakhazaana.

Cheers!

Thanks @⁨Ajiththite for your compliments. Challenges motivate us to write posts. I also think you for floating out this challenge, otherwise I would have never thought of having a written record of the importance of this home made food, which is not only nutritious but also prevents us from diseases.
