Feature Suggestions for Google Maps: Time-Based Imagery and Speed Bump Alerts

Hello fellow Local Guides!

As a dedicated Local Guide, I’ve created a document outlining two feature suggestions that I believe would greatly enhance the Google Maps experience for all users:

1. Time-Based Imagery for Locations

This feature would dynamically display images of locations based on the time of day, helping users visualize how places look in the morning, afternoon, evening, or night. This would provide:

  • Better decision-making for users planning visits
  • Safety improvements by helping users gauge lighting conditions
  • Enhanced relevance with time-appropriate visuals

2. Speed Bump Alerts

This feature would provide drivers with audio and visual warnings about upcoming speed bumps, creating:

  • Safer driving experiences by reducing sudden encounters with speed bumps
  • More comfortable rides by preventing abrupt braking
  • Reduced vehicle wear and tear through early alerts

According to data I’ve included in my full proposal, 29% of all traffic deaths in the U.S. in 2022 were speed-related (12,151 fatalities). Unexpected speed bumps can exacerbate these incidents.

I’ve created detailed flowcharts for both features showing implementation paths, along with comprehensive use cases and requirements analysis.

Would the Google Maps team be interested in reviewing my complete proposal? I’m passionate about making Maps even better and would appreciate any feedback![poll type=regular results=always public=true chartType=bar]

Has anyone else thought about similar features that would enhance safety or decision-making in Google Maps?

Hi @SrujanChidarla you should add your feedback within the Maps app itself. You can learn about this feature at How to send us feedback in Google Maps - Computer - Google Maps Help

The first idea is interesting and perhaps you might title it to be around safety instead of the esoteric time based imagery.

The second idea is unlikely because as a driver you are responsible for observing your environment and having situational awareness. You can report temporary issues such as pot holes within the app.
