[Feature Suggestion] Real Experiences + Ideas to Make Google Maps Even Better for Travelers

Hello Google Maps Team and Fellow Local Guides,

I’m Nasim M Joy, a solo traveler and a regular user of Google Maps.
Today, I want to share a few real-life experiences and based on them, suggest some new features that could make Google Maps even more powerful and helpful — especially for people who travel alone like me.

  1. Smart Fuel Alert Based on Remaining Distance

While riding my bike, sometimes I notice that my fuel is getting low.
If Google Maps allowed me to input a warning like “only 10 km worth of fuel left”, it could automatically monitor nearby fuel stations along my selected route.
When within that range, a notification alert like this could pop up:

“Low Fuel: Nearest fuel station ahead in 3 km. Prepare to refuel.”

This would help travelers manage speed, avoid missing fuel stations, and reduce anxiety while traveling.

  1. Restroom Finder Along the Route

(Sharing a Real Incident)
One day, I decided to walk home from my college in Sreepur to Datter Bazar, just for the fun of it.
After a long walk, I urgently needed a restroom. I checked Google Maps, but sadly, no public toilets were marked nearby.
In the end, I spotted a mosque on the map and personally requested the people there to let me use the restroom. Thankfully, they agreed.
But this experience made me realize: if there was a restroom locator filter showing options like public restrooms, gas station toilets, mosques, or rest stops, it would be a lifesaver!

Feature Idea:

Show restrooms automatically along the route.

Option to get an alert every 60 minutes or every 10–15 km suggesting restroom stops.

  1. Early Route Deviation Warning

Sometimes when I’m driving or walking, I miss turns because I am not checking the phone constantly.
It would be great if Google Maps could detect if I’m starting to stray from the original path and immediately warn me — maybe with a voice and vibration alert like:

“Warning: Off Route. Please correct now.”

It would help avoid major detours and confusion during trips.

Why These Features Matter

  • Solo travelers, bikers, delivery drivers, and walkers heavily depend on real-time navigation.

  • Proactive alerts about fuel, restrooms, and route deviation would make the journey much safer and more relaxing.

  • These small improvements can have a huge positive impact on real-world travel experiences.

Thank you Google Maps Team!

I love Google Maps and hope to see such features in the future!

After seeing your post, I have added 2 public restrooms along the Dhaka-Khulna highway on Maps which I saw on my way to Dhaka. Whenever I go to new places, I check whether the public restrooms are on place on Maps. However I think 1 and 3 might get integrated with vehicles in near future with integration of IoT in the society. Thanks for pointing these issues.
