Feature Request: Visual "Traffic Light" Filter for Map Pins (Color by Rating)

Hi Local Guides community!

I want to share an idea to improve the search experience on Google Maps and solve the “analysis paralysis” we often face when looking for new places.

The Problem: When we search for a generic category (like “Gym”, “Restaurants”, or “Hotels”), Maps displays all results with the same pin color (usually Red). This forces the user to click on each pin individually or scroll through the list to find the best-rated options. It’s time-consuming to filter quality at a glance.

Here is the current view (All red):

The Solution: Dynamic Color Coding I propose a visual filter that changes the pin color based on the Star Rating. It acts like a traffic light for quality:

  • :green_circle: Green Pins: Top-rated places (e.g., 4.5 to 5.0 stars).

  • :yellow_circle: Yellow Pins: Good/Average places (e.g., 4.0 to 4.4 stars).

  • :red_circle: Red Pins: Low-rated places or below average.

Here is a concept of how it could look:

The Benefit: This simple visual change would allow users to instantly identify the best spots in an area without checking every single listing. It makes the map much more useful and interactive.

What do you think? Would this help you choose places faster?

Thanks!

Just to add a thought: In today’s era of immediacy, I believe this visual change is fundamental to helping people find the best-ranked places as quickly as possible.

Furthermore, this would significantly boost the importance of the review system. No local business would want to appear as a ‘yellow’ or ‘red’ pin on the map, so it would encourage owners to improve their service and actively seek better reviews. It’s a win-win for users and businesses aiming for excellence

Hi @Tomas_Chaile

Thanks for sharing.

A few comments.

The pin colors are reserved for the different categories. Hospitals and doctors are red while parks are green. So a different use of colors could create confusion.

When you search you can select some filters like Top rated and Open now to enhance your search. This might be what you need. Please check it out and let me know.

Hi Morten, thanks for your feedback!

I understand the concern about color consistency, but I’d like to clarify the context of my idea, addressing your points:

  1. Contextual Colors vs. Global Colors: My proposal applies specifically to “Search Mode,” not the default exploration map. As you know, when a user searches for a specific term (e.g., “Gyms”), irrelevant categories like parks or hospitals disappear from the map view. In this isolated context, there is no risk of confusing a “Green Top-Rated Gym” with a park, because parks are not displayed during a Gym search.

  2. Immediacy vs. Filters: While the “Top Rated” filter exists, it functions by hiding options. In the era of immediacy, users often need to balance Quality vs. Distance. A 4.0-star gym next door might be preferable to a 5.0-star gym 5 miles away. The current filter hides the “average” options, forcing me to toggle filters on and off. My proposal allows users to scan all available options and evaluate quality/distance simultaneously without clicking or filtering.

  3. Visual Evolution: Maps already display numeric ratings directly on pins for some categories (like restaurants). Adding a color gradient (Traffic Light system) is just a faster, more visual way to process that same data instantly.

I believe adapting the UI for specific “Search Modes” would significantly reduce the time users spend clicking back and forth.

Thanks again for reviewing the idea!
