Farewell, My 11,637 Google Maps Followers

I just found out about a recent update on Google Maps: starting from September, the Followers and Following features will no longer be available. This means all the followers we currently have will disappear .

This news makes me really sad because I currently have 11,637 followers on Google Maps, and the number was growing every day. Seeing this growth always motivated me — it felt like my contributions were actually helping people, and that’s why they chose to follow me.

I still remember the day I reached 10,000 followers. I shared a Connect post

then and wrote that “ One day, In Sha Allah, I will reach 1 million followers.” But now, knowing that this feature will be removed soon, it feels truly disappointing.

So before all my followers disappear, I wanted to share this post as a memory. As of today, 25 August 2025, my total number of Google Maps followers is 11,637. By September, it might grow a little more before it’s gone.

Personally, I think Google could have kept this following option — and even added a messaging feature. That way, contributors could directly communicate, correct each other’s information, and provide more accurate directions and reviews through Google Maps.

I think that’s a good thing that they will remove this feature, because for me it’s more important to read Unbiased reviews of locations that I didn’t visit and not have to always get the same results on top for Ppl that I follow on Google Maps. I mean it’s not like on TikTok where having many followers is very important, on Google Maps it’s important to have quality unbiased reviews that are appreciated by other people. Followers are not important.
