Hi everyone. There is a question that is coming out on Connect at least twice every week: Why my rating is so low?
A lot of Local Guides are asking about rating after checking their contributions on Google Maps, because they see a very low value in there.
LGs with a rating of 3 or less, someone with a rating of zero, were very worried. They wrote in Connect thinking that the “rating number” was the “Evaluation of their activities on Google maps”, asking how to increase the number.
Here is my rating (or at least it was before to write this post). My rating was pretty high, isn’t it?

First of all, to understand the meaning of that number, we need to understand What a rating is. If you check on Points, levels, and badging, you will read:
| Maps contribution | Points earned |
|---|---|
| Review | 10 points per review |
| Review with more than 200 characters | 10 bonus points per review |
| Rating | 1 point per rating |
So, Rating is Not the evaluation of your activity on Google Maps. Rating is something for which you take points. Rating is the term to define the score (stars) that you give to a business. Here below an example
“I gave a lot of rating”, is what most of the Local Guides say now, so “why my number is so low?”. The answer is simple: The rating number shows the number of POIs where you gave a rating only, without adding a review. In this way you will know in how many place your review is missing.
To show how it works I have prepared a simple example, using the place shown over here:
I added a long review: https://goo.gl/maps/EjXFUeYMZmoMddjZ9
Then, I checked my contributions again. As you can see, my rating number is decreased to 18, and my reviews number is increased to 464. I have other 18 ratings to find (probably from my first contributions as a Local guide) so to reach the wanted ZERO on ratings

Everything is clear now?
Don’t be any more surprised if, when you say “my rating is SO LOW” a lot of people just say “congratulations”. Lower is the Rating Number, better is your own performance. You are doing well
