Fake offensive places

  • I don’t know about other countries, in here mostly students add fake places to map with offensive or funny stuff with their friends name. Those all are for joke. And almost all the places are not in English language, so I think even Google map team can’t understand that they are fake.even some of them are related to illegal business stuff. All of them are joke but I feel like it’s not good. When we report them, Google can’t verify even . Is their any thing we can do? I think if they know the real meanings given by the place name , they will surely remove them. But they are not in English :face_with_head_bandage:

Hi @ChathuraL

It’s funny how we often forget to mention where we live. In the real world this is always a given, but here on Connect you could be anywhere to me. I live in Denmark, a small country just north of Germany in Europe. Where do you live and experience the problems you described?

You are doing the right thing = reporting them as spam and suggesting them removed. And by providing feedback to the team.

Next step is to make a small collection of fake+funny POIs and share links to them here on Connect and explain why they are fake. Tag a moderator and hopefully a lesson can be learned.

Another step is to team up with other serious local guides speaking your language. And then collaborate on providing feedback. Over time you will learn what language (keywords) to use to make the google staff listen. Or you could organize a virtual map-editing meet-up where the agenda is to collaborate on solving the problems fake POIs one by one.

All the best

Morten

Hello @ChathuraL

As per my understanding, there are members of the Google team who can understand most of the different languages listed here. Further, there is a Connect moderator from your country to whom you can always tag to resolve the country-specific problems.

Making a joke of any constructive activity is not something new. Nevertheless, many LGs are doing a cleanup of these type of wrongdoings and you can also contribute to that.

@C_T got it. Thanks for the reply.

Can u help?

Hello @ChathuraL you might also want to check out the Local Guides Clean The Map project (#LGCTM), and especially this tip from @Amiran

And please don’t give up easily in trying to get stuff like that removed from Maps - even though at first (some / a lot of) your suggestions are rejected, I have personal experience that this is getting better over time.

There is no option to explain why is that fake or offensive by words. If there’s such a option we can easily tell what’s going on :face_with_head_bandage:

That is why it is important to collect some examples and then post them here on Connect @ChathuraL , that is the best option to pass on extra info.

By the way, I have just published another post on a related topic
