Muthumalai Murugan Statue is a striking blend of devotion, art, engineering, and harmony with nature. Standing tall at 146 feet, it is among the tallest Murugan statues in the world and has become a major landmark near Salem.
An interesting fact is that this statue is crafted by the same sculptor who created the iconic Murugan statue at Batu Caves Murugan Statue, Malaysia. While the Batu Caves statue is known for its golden finish, the Muthumalai Murugan Statue stands out with its vibrant colors and intricate detailing.
The facial expression, vel-holding posture, and well-balanced body proportions showcase exceptional craftsmanship. Set against a scenic hill backdrop, the statue appears even more majestic. Many visitors also observe that the surrounding hills resemble Lord Murugan’s face, adding to the spiritual aura of the place.
What truly makes this monument special is its respect for nature. Small openings were intentionally designed to allow parrots to nest, and even a beehive found on the statue during my visit, was preserved instead of being removed. Subtle features like the earrings appearing to sway with the wind further highlight the thoughtful engineering behind this structure.

Rs 10 is charged to go near and touch the feet of the statue.
