Exploring the legacy of India first president: Dr Rajendra Prasad: Mahaprayan Ghat, Patna

Namaste, Local Guide!

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to explore the memorial dedicated to Dr. Rajendra Prasad, India’s first president. He was a teacher, lawyer, freedom fighter, and an exemplary human being. Dr. Prasad was the first permanent member of the Indian Constituent Assembly and was elected as the first President of India. His contributions to framing the Indian Constitution alongside other assembly members were remarkable.

Dr. Rajendra Prasad was actively involved in India’s freedom struggle and played a significant role in various movements aimed at liberating India from British rule. One notable issue was theTin Kathia system imposed in the Champaran region of Bihar, which forced farmers to allocate one-third of their land for the cultivation of indigo. Along with Mahatma Gandhi, Rajendra Prasad and other freedom fighters initiated their struggle to free India from British oppression. As a lawyer, he utilized his legal knowledge to analyse the injustices of the system and support Gandhi’s campaign against the Tin Kathia system.

This memorial is located in Patna, near Bans Ghat. The site was chosen because Dr. Rajendra Prasad spent a significant part of his life in this city, from childhood to old age. He travelled extensively from India to various parts of the world, but he always carried his simplicity and culture with him. As I walked through the premises, I found an inscription that contained Dr. Rajendra Prasad’s last words. I was struck by the simplicity and humility that characterized his immense contributions to the country. He remained a man of the people, always focused on the welfare of the nation rather than seeking personal accolades.

Visiting this place was not just a historical experience, it served as a reminder of the values of service, integrity, and selflessness that he embodied. It was a moment to reflect on how far India has come and acknowledge the foundational leaders who paved the way for the country’s future. If you are in Patna, I recommend visiting [Mahaprayan Ghat] :round_pushpin:(Google Maps) to pay tribute to India’s first president. The [Rajendra Smriti Sangrahalaya] :link:(Google Maps) is where all of his belongings are kept and is open to the general public. I hope to visit and explore this place someday for all of you. Let us pay our respects in words and think about what more we can do to commemorate this great soul who shaped our future in a brighter direction.

Here is my Review on Google map.
