Sri Lanka has many lakes, but most are man made as many as 2000 years ago. Bolgoda, the largest natural lake in Sri Lanka covers 374 square kilometers with partly fresh and brackish water. Its close proximity to the commercial capital Colombo has made it a popular destination among city dwellers who are seeking to spend some quality time with nature. I love to explore the big lake and it’s forested banks whenever I get the time. The lake is popular for fishing. You’d get to see many fish eating birds and If you are lucky, some monkeys too! When traveling by boat you’d get to see a tot of prawn traps crisscrossing the lake put up by the local prawn fishermen. The mangrove forest in the middle of the lake is lovely and there are few small uninhabited islands you can travel to. Visiting and spending a night on one of those is an awesome experience. The best times to explore the lake is early morning and in the evenings. Otherwise, it can get hot on the boat and uncomfortable when the Sun is directly above you. Enjoy a virtual trip with me!!
