The Terminal located on the bank of the Khimki reservoir. The building resembles a huge double-deck ship, it was built in 1933–1937 simultaneously with the Moscow Canal, even before the Khimki reservoir was filled.
The main theme in the architectural and artistic design of the North River Terminal is the presentation of Moscow as a port of five seas. Thanks to the opening of the Moscow Canal in the 1930s, river vessels sailing from here could reach five seas: Azov, Black, Caspian, Baltic, and White Seas.
During the restoration, the star was restored - the main decorative element of the Terminal, which crowned the spire of the building for 80 years. It was made in 1935 from stainless steel. A hammer and sickle are fixed in the center of the star - these are symbols of the Soviet state, which is a symbol meant to represent proletarian solidarity – a union between the peasantry and the working-class. Aquamarines were used to decorate them. Each gem is fixed in a separate cell covered with gold.
Hello @SergeySud , very nice pictures from a very nice capital. To long ago that I have been in Moscow. Is time to plan again a trip to this beautiful town.
How you was able to make such a clear picture from the top of the tower? Special camera?
Thank you for sharing these incredible photos with us, I love such old and heavy architecture! The building is simply amazing both from the outside and the inside.
Was this your first visit to this place? Did you go there to see especially the building or you were travelling?
Usually, in such places, food and drinks are expensive! Is it the case for the restaurant inside the terminal?
Despite the fact that the object is located inside the city, it stands apart. Therefore, no one went there unnecessarily before the renovation. I’ve visited the location before, 12 years ago, the port was in operation, but the Terminal building was in a sad state and therefore was closed to the public.
Two years ago, the city authorities began a large-scale restoration of the building, as well as the large adjacent park. When I heard the announcement of the opening of the facility to the public, as a Local Guide, I immediately rushed to visit it. This was a special visit, a photo walk for Google Maps.
The new restaurant opened with a renovated building just two days ago. Surely it was not mapped. I added the restaurant to the Maps, took a few photos. Prices in a restaurant are really not cheap, but finding a cheap restaurant in Moscow is not easy at all.
We are always glad to have guests, you’re welcome as soon as the situation with the coronavirus changes.
About the photo of the star, there is no miracle here. The main roof of the building is open to the public. From there to the star is not so far. My kit 18-105mm lens was good enough for such a huge star.
I’m just going to visit and see new river port near Rechnoi Vokzal subway station. So that, your photos @SergeySud is the additional motivation for me. I have been there three years ago and placed the image of terminal and park here. How did you find the adjacent park near the terminal building during your photo walk? Are there a lot of changes or not?
