Exploring Lal Kot: Delhi's First Fortified City

Dear Local Guides Community,

I recently explored the first ‘Red Fort’ of Delhi—Lal Kot—tucked away in the serene Sanjay Van in Mehrauli! This incredible site, often overshadowed by the later Mughal fort, is where the story of Delhi truly begins.

History of Lal Kot :

Lal Kot, which means ‘Red Fort,’ was the first medieval city of Delhi. It was constructed by the Tomar ruler Anangpal II around 1052 CE. The citadel was later expanded and fortified by the Chauhan king Prithviraj III (Rai Pithora), and the entire complex, known as Qila Rai Pithora, served as the capital until the early Sultanate period, around the beginning of the 14th century. It was made of red sandstone, hence the name Lal Kot.

The first historical reference of the place being called as Lal Kot can be found in Abu Fazl’s Akbarnama. He also mentions that after the Sultanate era started, Mohammed Bin Tughlaq used to store onions in this place. It’s main entrance was called Ranjeet Darwaza, later renamed as Ghaznak Darwaza. Another entrance to the fort was called Yogini Darwaza, which probably would have led straight to the famous Yogmaya Temple of Mehrauli.

Present Condition :

Today, Lal Kot is largely in tattered ruins, but walking along the massive, 60-foot-high stone ramparts gives you a tangible sense of its former scale. The surviving walls and bastions are a wonderful sight for a heritage walk. People hike up the steep and narrow stone pathways to enjoy the serene atmosphere and the magnificent sunset. I also saw a few pet lovers bringing their dogs for a stroll up the hills!

Exploring an ancient Baoli (Step-Well) :

When we enter Sanjay Van from the Mehrauli entrance and walk towards the Lal Kot ruins, we can see a recently excavated remains of an ancient Baoli. While the full extent of the Baoli is still being excavated, I was mesmerized by the ancient Step Well which was probably used during the 12th Century.

The legend of the first Sufi Saint of Delhi :

While exploring the area, I was deeply moved by the legend of Sufi Saint Haji Ruzbi. He is believed to be one of the first Sufis to arrive in Delhi, possibly during the time of Prithviraj Chauhan (12th century). His tomb, or dargah, was located near the fort’s entrance. Though the physical structure of the shrine was destroyed controversially a few years ago, its historical and spiritual legacy as a place of early Sufi influence remains tied to these ancient walls.

Accessibility Check :wheelchair_symbol::cross_mark: :

The beautiful Sanjay Van park is wheelchair accessible, but washrooms are not available. However, we need to do a trek up the hilly area to see the ramparts of Lal Kot.

Other useful information :

Best time to visit is during sunrise or sunset. Try to avoid visiting during the monsoon season. Wear comfortable walking shoes and carry a bottle of water.

The Lal Kot truly a must-visit spot for any history enthusiast!
