From an Egyptian Local Guide living in Yogyakarta
Tugu Jogja
Hello Local Guides ![]()
Iโm Mohamed Saied, an Egyptian Local Guide (Level 7) currently living in Yogyakarta, Indonesia โ a city where history, culture, and daily local life meet in a very authentic way.
For the first post in this daily series, Iโm starting with one of the most iconic landmarks in Yogyakarta: Tugu Jogja.
Tugu Jogja is not just a monument you pass by; it is a symbol that represents the identity, philosophy, and resilience of the city. Locals see it as a meeting point, travelers see it as a landmark, and together it quietly tells the story of Jogja.

A Brief History & Philosophy
Tugu Jogja was originally built in 1755 during the reign of Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono I, the founder of the Yogyakarta Sultanate. The original structure symbolized the spiritual and philosophical axis connecting Mount Merapi, the Sultan, and the Southern Sea, reflecting harmony between humans, leadership, and nature.
After being severely damaged by the 1867 earthquake, the monument was rebuilt and redesigned, resulting in the white pillar (Tugu Pal Putih) we see today. Despite the changes, its meaning as a symbol of unity and endurance remains strong.
Best Time to Visit & Photograph
-
Early Morning (5:30 โ 6:30 AM):
Quiet atmosphere, soft natural light, and minimal traffic โ ideal for clean and balanced photos. -
Evening to Night (6:30 โ 9:00 PM):
Tugu lights up beautifully and becomes a lively point surrounded by city movement and local life.
All photos shared are taken by me.
Best Cafรฉ with a View of Tugu
From my personal experience, Kebon Ndalem Coffee & Eatery is one of the best places to enjoy a direct view of Tugu Jogja.
Itโs a well-known, multi-level cafรฉ, and the upper floors offer excellent angles for photography, especially during the blue hour and at night.
What to Visit Near Tugu (Walking Distance)
If youโre around Tugu Jogja, you can easily explore:
-
Malioboro Street (10โ15 minutes walk)
The most famous street in Yogyakarta for shopping, street food, and local vibes. -
Beringharjo Market
A traditional market offering batik, souvenirs, and local snacks. -
Kraton Yogyakarta (The Sultanโs Palace)
The cultural heart of the city and a key place to understand Javanese heritage.
Local Guide Tip
Donโt just photograph Tugu itself โ take a moment to observe how people move around it. The interaction between the monument and everyday life is what truly defines its character.
Question for you:
Do you prefer photographing landmarks early in the morning or at night?
Is there a landmark in your city that represents its identity?
Looking forward to your comments, and see you in the next post as we explore Indonesia one place at a time.
