Exploring elusive Street Art along the heart of Kuala Lumpur old city center

The old city section of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia covers the areas between Dataran Merdeka (https://g.page/dataran-merdeka-kuala-lumpur?share ), Masjid Jamek (https://goo.gl/maps/HVqspiKnbp3MNz6SA ) and Chinatown (https://g.page/chinatown-kuala-lumpur?share ). This place used to the the main city center many years ago, the era before sky scrapers came, and nowadays, the new city center is considered to the the Petronas Twin Towers (https://g.page/petronastwintowersofficial?share ).

In the old city, there are so many hidden treasures, if only one takes time to walk and look around. Today’s expedition involves exploring, hunting and capturing elusive street art around this historical area, which anonymous artists paint over occasionally, in the wee hours of the morning, and pleasantly surprising people who live and work there.

There are so many hidden street arts all around, the below is just a handful that I could photograph, and this would be good as a meet-up idea to explore the inner areas for more street art together.

[Picture below] - An artist depiction of the old Chinatown in the days where Kuala Lumpur just started as a muddy mining town.

[Picture below] - A full wall painting of the how people lived during the olden simpler times.

[Picture below] - A painting of peaceful waters of a villager bathing an elephant and its baby along the Masjid Jamek view point.

[Picture below] - A wall painting depicting the modern fast moving life.

[Picture below] - A wall painting depicting “ke hadapan” meaning to move forward.

[Picture below] - A wall painting depicting the reconnection of the present to the past which is important to preserve our culture and heritage.

[Picture below] - A 3D art of a father sending his son to shool on a bicycle. That’s how life used to be. from Malaysia’s favorite cartoonist Lat

[Picture below] - A 3D art of visitors looking up into the sky mesmerized by something… but what? from Malaysia’s favorite cartoonist Lat

[Picture below] - Coffee time… ? from Malaysia’s favorite cartoonist Lat

[Picture below] - A wall street painting of our elusive secretive artists painting over walls in the city.

[Picture below] - A possible depicting of their group name (can’t be certain).

[Picture below] - A painting over a shop roller shutter.

[Picture below] - The pictures above were captured around the red star marked areas. There are plenty more street art to explore, and in time, we will uncover more.

For me, all these street art makes the old city come alive. And it forms one particular attractions to bring visitors locally as well as soon, foreign places once the pandemic is taken care of.

Do you have beautiful street art around your area? Why not write a post and share some of them.

Hello @StephenAbraham ,

Thank you for sharing these amazing photos with us, every single painting looks incredible!

I love the way almost each street art illustration has a different style, from cartoon to more mature ones.

I am sharing with you a photo of one of the most beautiful street arts that I came across in Sofia, Bulgaria.

@AbdullahAM Thanks. some of these street art were quite hidden away in the small alley. Quite fun to explore to find them.

@Gurukrishnapriya Are there street art around where you are? Most of these are painted unofficially by self artists at night without approval.

@TravelerProdipta Thanks. Hope to see some street art from around where you are.

@TravellerG Thanks. Are there much street art around your area?

@BorrisS Another reason for me to come visit all of you there! It will be amazing to go out to explore all these places of interest.

@CAAG1959 Thanks for your kind thoughts.

You’re welcome @StephenAbraham !

By the way, I forgot to tell you that there is a Graffiti tour in Sofia.

As you are aware that in Kerala, I have rarely seen graffiti… Our rainy climate may be a reason…

But, in other cities I have seen, though, I’m not a fan of graffiti …

Thanks friends, @StephenAbraham

Hello @TravellerG ,

As far as I know, this tour happens several times during the month.

There are scheduled dates for gathering groups of people and having a walk across the city, while discovering its street art. As this event is very much appreciated by tourists, the guide always explains everything in English and the price is very symbolic.

I will check for further details and let you know!

There might be unofficial street art in rural areas.

In my city the walls are painted by getting permission @StephenAbraham

I had the chance through an NGO to paint regarding sustainable goals on the wall under the Gemini Flyover before the pandemic.

Third from left painting the fish it’s me

Now the city scapes are beautifully painted by many artists.

@StephenAbraham quise decir “vandalizar” en vez de “canalizar”.
