Exploring a hidden Seasonal Gem in Gazipur by Nasim M Joy

In 2023, when I was living in Kapasia, Gazipur, I first heard about the famous Beguni Bazaar. Many locals spoke highly of this unique seasonal market, but due to my busy schedule, I never had the chance to visit it.

Last Thursday, I returned to Kapasia. During the journey, I heard that the market would be held again on Friday morning. I immediately decided that this time I wouldn’t miss the opportunity.

The next day, my brother in law Nazmul and I woke up at 6:00 AM and set off on our motorcycles. After a pleasant 10–15 minute ride along the winding rural roads of Kapasia, we finally arrived at Beguni Bazaar.

The moment I entered the market, I was amazed. Everywhere I looked, there were enormous piles of jackfruits. It was an incredible sight and unlike anything I had seen before.

It is worth mentioning that Gazipur, especially the areas surrounding Beguni Bazaar, is well known for producing some of the finest and most delicious jackfruits in Bangladesh. Because of their excellent quality and taste, jackfruits from this region are highly popular and in great demand across the country.

At the entrance of the market, I noticed a vendor selling traditional clay household items. Walking further inside felt like stepping back in time. The market still features old-fashioned earthen shops, preserving a piece of rural heritage that is becoming increasingly rare.

Throughout the market, buyers and sellers were busy negotiating prices over huge stacks of jackfruits. Once deals were finalized, large trucks transported the fruits to different parts of the country, while local farmers continued arriving with fresh harvests on vans, auto-rickshaws, and other local vehicles.

Besides jackfruits, the market also hosts a variety of small stalls selling fishing nets, ropes, farming supplies, seasonal fruits, flower plants, children’s toys, and other local products.

One of the most unique traditions of Beguni Bazaar is enjoying muri (puffed rice) with fresh fruits. People travel from far and wide just to experience this simple yet delightful local breakfast. According to local vendors, around 800 to 900 visitors gather every market day to enjoy muri and seasonal fruits together.

Markets dedicated almost entirely to a single seasonal fruit are extremely rare, making Beguni Bazaar a truly special destination.

However, this market is not open throughout the year. It is held only during the jackfruit season, every Monday and Friday, starting early in the morning.

If you ever visit Kapasia during the jackfruit season, don’t miss the opportunity to explore Beguni Bazaar. It offers a wonderful glimpse into rural Bangladesh, its agricultural traditions, and the vibrant culture surrounding the country’s national fruit. If you’re a fan of authentic local experiences, Beguni Bazaar is definitely a place worth visiting at least once.
