Exclusive: Edit a road segment in Google Maps

4/27/17 UPDATE: The ability to edit road segments in Google Maps on Android and iOS is now available to all Google Maps users.

As we announced last November, we’re working to graduate Map Maker functionality into core Google Maps products. We have since released features enabling Local Guides to moderate recent edits to nearby places on Google Maps for Android and on your desktop computer (with an iOS version coming soon). We are focused on continuing to develop great moderation experiences, so stay tuned for new updates throughout the year.

One of the most requested features to bring to Google Maps from Map Maker is the ability to add and edit roads. Today we are launching the first part of a revamped editing flow in Google Maps targeting road segment editing. This first launch features a new selection UI and the ability to report issues on multiple road segments at once on desktop Google Maps (for Level 5 Local Guides) and Google Maps for Android (slowly rolling out to everyone).

How to edit a road segment:

  1. Open Google Maps on your desktop computer OR the Google Maps app for Android
  2. Tap = to open the side menu
  3. Scroll down to “Send Feedback”
  4. Tap “Edit the map”
  5. Tap the road segment you want to edit
  6. Tap “Next”
  7. Suggest the changes for the road you selected (Name, Incorrectly drawn, One-way/two-way, Closed, or Private)
  8. Tap Send

Look for more announcements in the future, including the ability to report a missing road, report issues on a full route, and further down the line, report more complex attributes like real-time closures and events.

We’re excited to hear your feedback on this first step as we improve the road editing process in Google Maps, working towards our goal of assisting everyone as they navigate the world around them.

Update: Mar9 09:30 HKT with Photo added

I found it. It might depends on Browser version used. {Or I just got a new version after this few hours :slight_smile: }

Chrome 56.0.2924.87 (64-bit) on macOS

{ I will re-test with my home machine and update back }

Time tested: 09:00 Mar 9, 2017 HKT

Here is the steps:

  1. After choose Edit Map, Maps will prompt you to click on the Maps, with Road Segments available for clicking highlighted in Pink

  2. I can click on a road, or

  3. I can click on somewhere, and Maps will auto select a nearest road segment. If that road segment is out of screen, Maps will pan and show the selected segment. Well done, Maps!

  4. Once clicked, Maps will display the Dialog box to ask for details. At this point, we can click on more Road Segments (just click will do, no need to Shift-click, etc)

  5. I can click on a selected segment to un-select it. Even the only segment selected can be un-selected, and select another part.

  6. After selection is done, just input the details and submit.

Thus clearly, this routine is not for reporting Missing Roads which we have to wait for the next feature update.

I need help to select multiple road segments in Desktop Maps.

It seems I can only select one segment now. Or need to wait for the new version?

Do they need to be continuous?

Is this new feature available in limited countries as Map Maker? “Countries being mapped - Map Maker Help” https://support.google.com/mapmaker/answer/155415?hl=en

Thank you @AndrewC_8 !

Do you get the version with the Pink color highlight for selectable road segments? I find that no need to do Ctrl-click / Shift-click. Just a click is OK to select multi-segments.

Thank you @Corrie . I have tried to replicate the method mentioned in your announment and was unable to use the new feature. Please look at the attached screenshot and keep in mind that I tried to kill the app and cleared cache as well as restarted the phone.

I’m running Maps Beta 9.47.3 (#947300224) on Android N 7.1.1 (Build- N4F260O / Nexus 6P)

@Amr_A , have you try using Desktop Maps?

@YK1001 The option to suggest a change to roads on desktop Maps has been avalilable for me for sometime now. I do not have any problem with that already.

I’ve been using map maker for a few years now and have >2k edits so having this functionality baked into Google maps has made the process much more easier. Great news @Corrie

Is it “real” editing or only reporting?

I think that it’s reporting - i can’t edit any segment. I can suggest that it is wrong drawn (but i can’t draw it correctly), i can suggest that road is one-way and i have to describe which direction is correct.

In “real” editing tool should be feature to select correct direction of road (describing means that somebody have to check it and accept/decline manually) , automaticly closing and reopening roads.

And this “new” tool isn’t new and works for everyone, not only LG5  Just right click on the road, select “Report data problem on the map” and voila

Glad to hear these features are on the roadmap. But the road is long to get to the same level of road editing functionalities we had in Map Maker

Also, who is gonna be approving these and will we have any insight into the process? This was a major problem in MM as you surely know

Thanks,
Daniel
