This is the exchange rate checked at Haneda Airport in 2024.
Generally, the “Travelex” currency exchange shops at Haneda and Narita airports can exchange many currencies.
Ordinary bank currency exchange shops have better rates, but they only accept a limited number of currencies.
There are currency exchange shops in downtown Tokyo, but they only accept major currencies.
Major currencies are only a few currencies such as the US dollar and the euro.
The numbers written here are commission rates. I think the commission rate for US dollars at currency exchange shops in downtown Tokyo is around 2%.
A more cost-effective way to exchange money.
If you want to convert a currency with a 10% commission to Japanese yen, and the commission for US dollars in your home country is 7% or less, you can still exchange more cost-effectively by going through US dollars first.
The fees may not be the same when you travel.
Of course, you can also withdraw money from ATMs other than exchanging it from cash.

You get the best rate by just using your debit or credit card to pay directly to the vendors in Japan. When we visited Japan in 23 it was my experience that you don’t really need cash anymore. A payment app on your phone will take care of small transactions including public transport.
