I want to believe there is at least one ‘variety of Pear’ in every country of the world. Do you have Pear in your country?
In Nigeria, there are three kinds of Pear;
- English Pear (imported)
- Avocados. There are two species of the Avocado I have seen in Nigeria.
- Native Pear (it’s purple in color and is grown in the South-Eastern Part of Nigeria) and often times, it is roasted before eaten. I don’t have a picture.
I have noticed that if I do not wait for my Pear to get soft (it turns brownish when it is soft enough to be eaten), it tastes 75% like the English Pear.
So, If you had to choose between the English Pear and the Avocado, which will you choose and why?

I think in the Netherlands we just have one type of we call Pear*( Pyrus sp.).* About 3000 known varieties of pears are grown worldwide. The fruit is consumed fresh, canned, as juice, and dried. In 2017, world production of pears was 24 million tonnes, with China as the main producer.
We have two distinctive types of Pear in our (super)markets and vegetable shops. These are:
- The hand pear generally has a green color with sometimes a red blush on the sunny side, a soft skin that is easy to remove, and juicy and soft flesh.
- The cooking pear is also green, but is dry and hard, and only becomes edible after a long cooking.
Cooking Pear
A delicious recipe for poached pears in red wine. You only need a handful of ingredients. You can eat the pears as a dessert, warm or cold.
Ingredients:
- 4 large firm pears - peeled, cored, and quartered
- 1½ cup white sugar
- 1peel of 1 orange
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1 (750 milliliter) bottle red wine
Preperation:
-
Step 1
Place pears in a saucepan. Add sugar, orange peel, and cinnamon stick. Pour in red wine to cover pears completely. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer gently until pears are soft and deep red in color, about 2 1/2 hours.
-
Step 2
Transfer pears to a serving plate using a slotted spoon. Serve the pears warm or cold.
Choosing between pear and avocado
A very difficult choice as I like both very much and they taste so different.
Ps. I head to look up your Purple Pear (Dacryodes edulis) as I never seen or heard about this. I would really like to try and taste it.
Have you tried cooking over fossil fuel?
Yes in different ways the most popular one is what is called barbecue (BBQ).
