Street art or as they call it “call it an appropriation of the walls” is usually tagged with vandalism and usually done in secrecy. The graffiti art form emerged from the neighborhoods as a type of expression for urban flare.
There several blocks in the Brooklyn of Bushwick(Bushwick Collective) where street artists are free to paint murals on building walls. This is well known that artists from around the world go this place to also showcase their mastery. Such street art was common in hiphop video culture of the 90’s
There’s something about the bright colours of the murals that pops and captures our eyes when you come across such them which makes you want to gravitate and hang around for a while.
Even though graffiti is illegal in most parts of the world it was good to see that Egerton Univerity has incorporated this form of art on the walls of their tennis and basketball courts. During our last local guides meet up[RECAP] - Map Editing Meet Up At Egerton we came across these amazing peace of art and stopped for a few pics. Well, to be honest we took a lot of them :-). I would love to see more of such grafitti art on walls in my town.
@LeeBee-SA Thanks for sharing these amazing photos from Johannesburg… To see them in the CBD speaks for itself on how the authorities have accepted street arts.
@LeeBee-SA I believe the authorities feels guilty pulling the murals down especially if they’re solid as you have said. When you come across the mural next time, please don’t forget to tag me when you post them.
